Oldngrizzly Ramblings

Thanks for checking in on my rambling thread. For today's topic I will discuss the shift from the Griz recruiting FBS players in the portal to recruiting D2 players. It seems a logical move if you consider it, but is it the answer for the Griz ?

How many of the o-line players you speak of have solid playing experience ?

I say it's the opposite on o-line coaches moving up is a good sign. It's VERY unstable for the program as far as player recruitment and for the players themselves. As we all know the line players are very important to the overall success of the team.
 
In my thread FBS to FCS portal transfers at this point some very interesting observation .The most striking being the number of FBS transfers to NAU. Will this be a team that Montana should be concerned about or is it another Sac State ? You will also see that so far Montana has taken one transfer and MSU none. Most relevant is the fact that most eastern FBS transfers stay in the east. The Dakota schools are picking up some quality transfers.

NAU has had some talented teams that have underperformed in the past like Sac State this year. I am going to lean toward this upcoming season will be more of the same for NAU until I see otherwise. They have EWU, Arizona, UIW and Montana State scheduled before October so we should know if NAU is legitimate or not by then.
 
The Griz have signed 10 portal transfers and we will sign more. Most of the signers have been ones that should have committed if offered. A couple linebackers with one year left so you would expect them to be starters or at very least in the rotation. So someone is looking at the next years roster and trying to fill holes. The most interesting transfer so far for me is CB- Gabe Stroud 5'11 190 (North Texas) 3 to play 3. It appears this player could be an excellent addition.
 
There was supposed to be a transfer for the portal today as be a game changer for the Griz according to Bobby Kennedy. Let's hope so because so far the portal transfers have not been any better than average or below except for Stroud.
 
Do we have a center with experience other than a long snapper? Why are we not bring in a center from the portal? There seems to be no activity on this position.

Do we have a center with college long snapping experience? I thought we don’t have anyone for next center with college long snapping experience.
 
It has been a good last couple of days for the Griz out of the portal. Finally some big wins. We will discuss that tomorrow in Oldngrizzly ramblins.
 
Hanks, if he stays healthy will be a good get. I like big ass lineman like I used to be except I was on the DL. Just liked kicking ass. That said will Hanks stick around after playing a year if he remains healthy? Time will tell but I suspect this is a rebuild year for him to move up.
Shaun Boykins appears to be an outstanding transfer. It appears he entered the portal for more playing time and some NIL. Running back /wide receiver, there is a lot of them so the competition for recruiting is not as desirable like other positions. Will he stick? If he likes it here I would think the answer is yes.
More discussion soon about other transfers and what players the coaches should be recruiting.:)

And regarding OL coach, we all griped about the lack of development for Germer who was loyal for years, and now we are on our 3rd new coach. It's the world we live in. I like the direction we are heading in and think the fact these guys keep moving up is probably a good sign, whether you like it or not.

This is a very sensible comment. Not to be Captain Obvious, but... Bad coaches don't move up, they might move laterally, or down, but very rarely up, and if they do, they don't stay long.

I want to see someone like Scrafford come back and coach the O line, but I'm biased because we went to high school together. How can you go wrong? I don't think He's interested though. Retirement and fishing are pretty fun.
 
As the portal entries near close let's reflect on the new transfers. As a whole most incoming transfers have more that a year of eligibility left. I would say that is a good thing. Some what of a change from last season. Reflecting on this what is my take? There are a few good transfers but there also are several wasted opportunities. Since majority of the players taken where not going anywhere soon it makes no sense to make some selections other than to quickly fill the roster spots for spring ball because of students having to be entered into class. Also, now the coaching staff can take some vacation time which is probably the most important part for them. I have more to add latter today. Check back, esp. the homers.

Spring ball is mostly a worthless event at this level. You can evaluate players other ways. I see no reason to jump at the most of the skill of players we recruit if you go down the path the Griz have with the portal.
