OK's Sampson to coach at Indiana

i see this as great news for griz fans. it means tom crean, rumored for indiana, stays at marquette, eliminating one job opening that might have been extremely attractive to krysko and his wife.

Kel was already at Tech when I got there in the fall of 81. If I recall correctly (and it was quite some time ago) he was an assistant starting in the 79-80 season. I 'm thinking he took over during the 80-81 season as head coach.

He stayed until the 84-85 season after winning 3 Frontier Conference titles. He won District XII coach of the year in both 83 and 85.

He also had a couple of Missoula bb players in former Sentinel star Darly Louma and then recruited Brad Huse to Tech; although I cant remember if Brad played for him or not.

I know Kel is also an excellent golfer having taught me how to play the game then!

Kelvin is a great guy and a change of scenery may be good for him. I wish him well.

Good for Sampson.......he made WAZZU into a tournament team, he brought the Sooners back to respectability. Now all he has to do at Indiana is win a championship. Getting to the Final Four is not sufficient down there.

Sampson isn't getting much love from OK or IN press.

A list of people the IU faithful wanted:

1. Steve Alford-----may have screwed it up losing in the first round of the NCAA's.
2. Isiah Thomas----His future in New York is dicey and some Hoosier alums wanted him.
3. Mike Woodson----former IU player
4. Dan Dakich----former IU assistant
5. Randy Wittman--former IU player
6. Butch Carter----IU alum
7. Quinn Buckner--former Mavs coach and IU alum
8. Anybody else who has ties to IU

I can't believe IU thinks they are making a great hire here. Sampson is being investigated by the NCAA, although he will likely get kid glove treatment since he has served on NCAA Committees. I can't believe IU also is overlooking his 0 Graduation rate.

I read an article that chronicled Sampson’s graduation rate at Oklahoma. JC players and guys that transfer into (or out of) the school get counted as a player but not as someone that has graduated regardless of whether they did. They talked about how he has to bring in JC players and transfers and even though they actually graduate from school they are not counted.
It was also brought up how players like Hollis Price are playing in Europe and have came back in the off season and graduated but it is outside of the time the NCAA gives the school to count them.
After reading this article and others it seems that the NCAA should come up with a new formula to formulate the calculation.

Sure, why doesn't the NCAA come up with a special formula just for Sampson. The reason he has the JC problem is that is precisely what he has recruited to Norman since the day he arrived. Face it, his guys didn't get it done in the classroom. I doubt he cared one iota. He better not have that tude at Indiana.

Where's Bobby Knight? Talking faithful, not administration.

Backer-

Based on your reply I am curious what your opinions are of JC kids that the Grizzlies have brought in over the last couple of years. I have never heard you rip on the Griz coaches bringing in Kamar Davis, Virgil Mathews, or Gus Chase next year. While I personally don’t feel that relying on JC kids over the long run are the way to build a program, if those kids graduate from school I do not think anyone should be punished. The same way that I don’t think the Grizzlies should be punished by Lynch, Hays, Easley, and McKay having to transfer.

My problem is the way that the NCAA calculates graduation rates. I’m not a coach so I do not feel it is my place to state how someone should run their program since personally I have never had to do it.

I have no problem with supplementing a program with some JC kids, almost everyone does it. I do have a big problem with a Coach who is under NCAA investigation for recruiting infractions of which he is personally involved in, not just his assistants, and I have a big problem with his ZERO graduation rate. Other than that, Sampson is doing a hell of a job.

I was a young kid in Butte when Sampson was at Tech. I attended camps at Tech and worked out at Tech's gym (shootarounds/weightraining) while he was there. I can say that hey had a good impact on my life in the short time I knew him...
