Officials and Rules

Myself and a few other fans commented on something we noticed on back to plays. After the punt return TD by JLM, then the following kickoff, JLM, then Lewis (I think) too off their helmets while still on the playing field after the plays. Is that not a penalty anymore? I know, a few years ago it was a penalty. If it is still a penalty, I hope the coaches remind the team of that. Little things like that could cost the GRIZ valuable field position.

As for targeting, I stumbled on this. After reading this, I thing the officials are calling the targeting correctly. https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/9/7/12829482/targeting-penalty-rulebook-ncaa-football

Not sure if the time you are referring to but Lewis had his helmet fly off while making the special teams tackle.....

I was referring to the kickoff right after JLM's TD return. I didn't see it come off during the play. We were celebrating the tackle, so it is possible that I just saw him with the helmet off and thought he took it off. I was not the only one questioning each of those incidents either.

I think that was Lewis case. He picked up helmet off turf and ran off with in his hand, JLM took his off as you saw....Bob might chat with him

I was one of the ones who felt that the targeting call on Cookus was maybe iffy, and I do admit to not having a good understanding of what the rule said and/or meant. I had even read the description in the exact link posted earlier in this thread the day of the game, and still wasn't completely clear. However, after finally getting to watch the replay of the Weber State game and the first targeting call in that game (I couldn't watch it live since I was working that day and didn't want to watch it later since the loss stung), I think the rule is making more sense to me. I still wish that the NCAA would write the rules a little more clearly ie: targeting is either leading with the crown of the helmet and hitting the opposing player anywhere on his body, and or hitting a player of the opposing team anywhere above the shoulders with force, etc... But I do get it now, and I totally see the need for the rule. When you guys can keep it civil you are a great resource for understanding the game better and for that I am thankful.

And by the way, in the Weber game...what the heck was the flag for on Jensen for simulating the snap? All he did was clap and nothing else. That made absolutely no sense to me.

We're all still trying to figure out the clap.

Wait. Hold up.

That didn't come out right.
