The Montana men's basketball program has signed a prep school standout from the East to a National Letter of Intent, announced fifth-year Grizzly head coach Wayne Tinkle.
Keron DeShields, a 6-foot-2, 177-pound guard from Baltimore is the latest addition to the Grizzly basketball program. DeShields made his official visit to Montana two weeks ago.
UM's newest commitment joins two prep players who signed early national letters last November: 6-2 guard Jordan Gregory from Pueblo (Colo.) East High School and 6-4 guard-forward Kevin Henderson from Auburn (Wash.)High School.
DeShields attended Vermont Academy in Saxtons River last season, where he played for first-year head coach Jesse Bopp and led the Wildcats to a 17-14 record and a berth in the NEPSAC AA playoffs.
"We are very excited about the addition of Keron to our program," Tinkle said. "He's going to bring a lot to our team. No. 1, I think his best attribute is his heart. He plays with an unbelievable amount of intensity and toughness, especially on the defensive end. He's a guard who can make plays off the dribble, and he can spot up and make threes.
"He's a delightful young man who improved significantly academically and athletically under the guidance of coach Bopp."
DeShields averaged a team-high 20 points a game and was a second team all-conference selection as a senior.
"He has earned a Division I scholarship through his work ethic and toughness," Bopp said. "He realized his dream and for that I am happy for him and his family who have supported him. Coach Tinkle did a tremendous job of recruiting him, and I am excited for him to play for such a good person. I believe Grizzly Nation will fall in love with this young man very quickly."
DeShields was a part-time starter at Towson Catholic High School in Baltimore as a sophomore, and when the Archdiocese of Baltimore closed that school's doors in the summer of 2009, DeShields moved on to St. Vincent Pallotti High School in Laurel, Md., and became a starter there and scored a career-high 35 points in one game.
