Observations regarding the first AD Candidate -Carl Clapp

Griz1

Well-known member
Did anyone attend the forum and meet Carl Clapp? If so what were your feelings about him and how would you think he would do as the new AD?

Attached is a source document on GoGriz related to him-

Here's the Missoulian article.

I assumed there would be a lot more chatter about this. Is there another thread I'm missing?

Thanks wbfg. I thought there would be a lot more attention to this matter also. I am concluding that the forum was not well attended. With all the imput regarding the new AD position I thought there would be a lot of people with a lot of questions in attendance. Everything I have heard or read about Clapp suggest to me that his answers appear to be boilerplate generic answers with no meat or bone to them. That is only my opinion and from a distance I am not impressed.

Several, but one that focuses on this particular candidate seems appropriate. (You might have added onto the thread "AD Candidate Forums Set" -- but so what?)

I really like this guy's breadth of experience. And, to me, it's actually a plus that his AD-type gigs have not been at big-time BCS schools. (I know, he was an assist. coach at the BCS level, but that's different).

It's also a plus, IMO, that he's from outside the Montana/Big Sky community. Yes, it would be nice if he could "hit the ground running" -- especially given the time we've spent without a real AD. But, as several have pointed out, being immersed in a particular environment can give you blinders about what is possible. A highly experienced new guy may seen opportunities an "insider" might miss. Moreover, he may see fixable problems that an insider might simply accept. It's all good.

It was a well controlled event, I won't attend another. My general sense of the guy is he was no nonsense and would make difficult decisions without hesitation. He would NOT be a friend of the brown-nosers. He seems sees a lot of work to be done and some house cleaning/dead wood.

I like this guy. I want someone who sees new opportunities and wants to move forward, not someone who wants to remain small-time

Clapp called himself a competitive person and said he’d come to Montana wanting to win Big Sky Conference championships, but by “doing things right.” This is a loaded phrase. It is a reflection on the way past things were done w/ UM football, and it's a clear signal that this guy would not go that way were he hired as AD. To me, that's a plus for him.

I also saw that and wondered did he really think UM did things the "wrong way"? And, how would he know this when we don't and the Administration has said no such thing? Not an auspicious beginning for this guy..I think UM has done a great deal the "right way"..

He addressed that by saying he would be evaluated by how he handled the sanctions arising from the federal and NCAA investigations. He mentioned MANY things as being right. The is virtually no chance that there will NOT be fallout from the investigations. Best have a man who realizes that from the git go.

Come on, guys. While you could be right, I think you're reading too much into one small part of a longer piece. We're just, shall we say, a bit sensitive here, with all the crap that has been coming down this summer, and the resulting flame-outs on eGriz.

Personally, I see this more as the usual "coach speak" (which he used to be, but it goes for most people in athletic administration). How many times have we heard that phrase? And we know of plenty of programs where they made that claim, even as they were faking transcripts, cheating on practice time, handing out dis-allowed goodies, etc. etc. But they know they're expected to say something like this ... so they do. As I say, let's not read too much into it.

Why are you guys so anti-dictators? Imagine if America was a dictatorship. You could let 1% of the people have all the nation's wealth. You could help your rich friends get richer by cutting their taxes. And bailing them out when they gamble and lose. You could ignore the needs of the poor for health care and education. Your media would appear free, but would secretly be controlled by one person and his family. You could wiretap phones. You could torture foreign prisoners. You could have rigged elections. You could lie about why you go to war. You could fill your prisons with one particular racial group, and no one would complain. You could use the media to scare the people into supporting policies that are against their interests.

This is not his 1st rodeo, nor any of the other candidates. After being on search committees themselves, people tend to know what is going to be asked, and how to answer it. The only way you really find out about them is to go to the places they have been and ask people you meet about them. What kind of person they are. What you can expect from them if they are hired. What to watch out for, etc. Just going to some one hour candidate forum isn't going to tell you jack squat about them, and you walk away guessing.

Yup, GB1 nailed it. You can also find out a lot about them from the people who've worked for them.
Not if they want to get rid of the person. They will say only relatively positive things, in the hopes that person WILL BE the one selected. I've seen that occur on a couple occasions, where the ultimate outcome (down the road a year or two) was a disaster.

When I read that I think of Dan Hawkins.
