I’m new to this forum, but somewhat knowledgeable on the subject of Oline and the Griz program. Every team wants the players that will progress into All Americans, but the reality is the percentages are low with nutrition.
When it comes to the Griz Oline (Hauck or Stitt) recruits the common denominator is Germer. If anyone believes that the position coach isn’t all in on a recruit and aware of who’s being offered then your kidding yourself. Germer had to of watched film on all Oline offers prior to BH’s hire. He was the one to hold down the fort in the hiring process, correct!
I’m not bashing Germer just stating fact-
-Germer likes height, 6’6”+
-Run blocking takes leverage (low man wins) you have to be athletic and aggressive
-Pass blocking is passive and requires very little athleticism, especially if they are only rushing 4, just have long arms and keep them away from you
-The Griz roster is full of 6’6”+ pass blockers
-NDSU runs the ball, they have “3” Oline on there roster over 6’5”
If a team wants to be a power run offense then recruit that style of Oline. It seems to be working for NDSU.
I don't know much about o-line and what it takes to run and pass block, but my former teammate's son, Brian O'Neill of the Vikings, is extremely athletic and 6'7", 300 or so. 2d round draft choice earlier this year and now starting at right tackle for Vikes. Converted TE in college. 4.80 and 4.82 40's at the Combine.
He is a pretty good pass blocker already, due to his athleticism. Sometimes get bull-rushed, but doesn't give up sacks. He lacks a bit in run blocking, because he doesn't yet have enough strength and size.
Nov. 15 article:
"He's since turned his first NFL start, replacement duty in Week 6 vs. Arizona, into the full-time job at right tackle. Only five other NFL tackles have played as much as ONeill (382 snaps) and not yet surrendered a sack this season, according to PFF."
