Notable Spring Changes

Kind of scratching my head on moving Owen. The coaches know best of course and this spring roster is using pre-fall 2013 weights so maybe he's added more weight/strength since then.

Some initial thoughts looking at the depth:

1. Linebacker is light, inexperienced, and thin on depth.

2. Ben Weyer looks to be in line to get tested at RG and Center with the 1st string.

3. It'll be interesting to see how Zach Peevey and Bo Harris duke it out as it seems all DTs will be looked upon for heavy contributions this year.

4. Cornerback depth is going to be a fascinating battle

5. It's time for Justin Whitted to shine (hopefully)

6. Counts, Kidder, Owen, & Kose all listed as going to be limited or non-participants - hopefully all due to surgery or injury recoveries and no other reasons.

7. Running backs are a stable of talent, looking forward to what the off-season has done to help the younger guys progress.

Unless you're talking punt formations... and kicking off to start both halves of course... ;)

28-14 ;)

I'd rather have a crazy coach than a limp d#ck one :P

Spring practice has traditionally been a time for some experimentation with both personnel and schemes. Some will work out well; others not so well. A lot of these changes will not be evident come summer camp. Some of the position changes won't make it out of spring ball. I, for one, am excited to see how some of the coach's thinking works out. There are some real interesting position changes the coaching staff plan to look at this spring. Going from a perceived abundance of wide-receivers to a very shallow (albeit, potentially productive) group of tested receivers is an area I will watch carefully. Moving Saylor and Vis from the wide-receiver core raised my eyebrows. A blocking TE is still a bit of an issue, but maybe there is a new scheme designed that will incorporate the TE into more of the passing game. Perhaps the thinking is that just having a greater receiving threat at TE will open up the outside with Henderson, Jones, and company more.

The initial depth chart hints that the coaching staff see a lot of promise in the two freshman linebackers, Schye and Strahm. I wonder if there is a plan to move Schye outside later in his career, but for now the team may need another MLB to be ready to play if Kose isn't ready to go or goes down sometime during the season. Is Conner Strahm likely to move to the middle later on? It looks like he may be developing the size to play there and I have always liked his football acumen. He is a "gamer."

It appears that the coaches want to add some more speed off of the edge, hence Owen's move to DE to add depth to the speed there.

Spring ball will be a time for the O-line to begin to gel as a unit and to identify starters and depth. Some O-linemen will be asked to learn multiple positions as younger players continue to develop size, strength, technique, and their understanding of O-line play and don't yet fit into the rotation on a regular basis.

The depth on the D-line is a concern and players like Harris and Peevey will be asked to demonstrate that they can/should be in the player rotation. I am interested to see how the young man out of Billings West (Bradley?) works into the rotation.

The same questions in the secondary persist, as in the past couple of years as slated starters still need to show that they can consistently man the position and back-ups are developed who can fill in if injuries occur or the starters can't do the job well enough.

I can't wait for spring ball to get rolling so that some of these questions and experiments begin to be answered and revealed. March 15 can't get here soon enough for me!

lippert, bradshaw and debruckyer are no longer on the roster. none of them recorded a tackle last year so im guessing they bagged it.

Don't know about Bradshaw or Debruckyer. I know that Lippert had a horrible turf toe all fall that would not heal. Not sure if he was able to heal from that or not or what his plans are.
Debryckyer played last year at Carroll and is enjoying himself. He saw the field and they are pretty excited about having him there. They actually talked him into coming by offering him some offense as a running back and/or receiver.

Finally, Saylor has been moved to TE. This should have happened two years ago. Not that I think Saylor will be a great TE, he could, but TE fits him much better in this offense. This offense needs a powerful run blocking TE, not 6-3 215 or 6-5 220. I'd be much more optimistic if Saylor was say...260lbs.

With Harper as our TE I think the coaching staff is telling the BSC to stop us if you can. We just might see the 50+ points per game average this year. We will be explosive on offense!

25-Shane Moody, 5-8, 160, Fr., RS
listed at 3rd string Boundry CB never heard of this guy

isn't that Bieneman's old high school? ...obvious project kid of some kind, I hope it works well for him and keeps a pipe line to the 110 high schools along Denver and Colorado....

exactly on owens.......he listed at 220 last year....pretty light DE...his quickness will hopefully make up for not tangle with the big offensive lineman.
