Not Tinkle & Not Krysko

I'm gunna have to disagree with about everyone on this board and say that I don't think Tinkle or Krysko should take over. I think that Tinkle needs a few more years as an Asst. and needs to coach under a great Head coach, Kennedy and Holst don't fill that requirement. Also he doesn't have a degree, come on give me a break, how do preach Academics to your players when you didn't even graduate. As for Krysko, didn't he leave his assistant job at UM, because his wife didn't like Missoula. Also I don't think winning a CBA division gives you D-1 head coaching Credentials. Though both are great UM alumni, I would put my vote on Rice from Gonzaga who has been under a great head coach in Mark Few and also knows the northwest.

I agree, hire Rice from Gonzaga, let Tinkle get a few more years experience, then when Rice moves on make Tinkle head coach. I remember when Krysko was assistant coach here and he didn't seem to ever interact very well with the kids or public. I think Tinkle will make a great head coach someday, but could use a little more experience under a good head coach. I also think he'd stick around for awhile, maybe as long as Selvig :D I know alot of the players want him to be their next head coach which says a lot.

I agree. I like Rice. The system and players at Gonzaga are to be highly admired. I think Rice would bring that to UM. Tinkle needs a few more years experience.

I've got my fingers crossed for the Tinks...

He lived on the same dorm floor with my brother and I threw back quite a few with him in 1987, when I was a Senior in HighSchool. LOL.

:drinking:

Seriously, I've kept in touch with him and he's about the nicest/sincerest guy I've met in his position. Personality aside, he seems to have a great feel for the game and has great raport with the players, and very close ties to the program..

Good luck Tinks, I'm holding my breath for you..

Having known Wayne since I was in middle school and going to UofM basketball camps, I do not believe we could possibly find a replacement that is as qualified as Wayne Tinkle.

Yes he might not have the coaching experience or the graduate degree, but remember, what did he do right after college? He went and played basketball in Europe for ten years. When it comes to basketball I will take basketball knowledge anytime.

I know that Wayne is salt of the earth type guy. Players love him and as do the people that know Wayne well. To me there is nothing more amuzing that watching a 6-10 guy play golf. He is really a solid man and he won't flake out on his responsibility on returning the UofM back to where it was when he played. Yes Krysko might have the pull, but seriously, I think it would be a slap in the face to Wayne who has put in the time over the past few years.

Here is hoping that Wayne gets the coaching job.

Great post Fijigriz07. Everybody in town is stunned that we aren't doing a truly open search. This is a program that hasn't had an open search (unless you count the Hogan/Kennedy job hand-off) since Heathcote was hired in the '70's.

And they wonder why the program has no credibility. Would either Tinkle or Krysko be a finalist for this job if they weren't the local fair haired boys? Assume that either of them played at Idaho State and came with their credentials. We wouldn't even consider them.

Now that is something to think about. Williamspo, you have my respect.

I'm curious why you guys think Rice is such a good choice? He's only been at Gonzaga since they started making the NCAA's. How does that make him qualified for building a program? Do think he's going to be able to approach the same recruits at Montana as Gonzaga? "Son, I know we were looking at you when I was with Gonzaga, but I'm Montana now..." -- I don't think so. He may turn out to be a fine coach some day, but I don't see anything in his bio that makes me think he's the guy.

Would anybody be mentioning Rice if he was an assistant at ISU?

I wouldn't have even said his name. My main reason for wanting the guy as head coach is because he's been mentored by Mark Few and I've read very good things about him. My hopes were that he would bring the same style/additude to the Griz.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not all that disappointed in the hiring of Krysko. I'll support anyone and hope they get the job done because after all...it's still the Grizzlies.
