Not FCS but...

Anyone watching the Arkansas State-Georgia Southern game? Not a horrid game, but an example of where the Griz would end up if they ever moved up ... playing on a Wednesday night, with 5000 people in the stands. Not exactly what I would aspire to.

You are playing Mississippi Valley State on Saturday...just saying...

Anyone who believes WaGriz wouldn't be packed for a Wednesday night game with Wyoming or Colo State on national television is smoking goooood shit.

I can guarantee there would be substantially more people there than will be on WaGriz half way through the second quarter on Saturday.

Speaking of empty stadiums, how about SacSt's Saturday...it looked like only parents were there. It's not like the BSC features good attendance outside MT. We'll likely see 4000 again when we play in Greeley.

Where or what is a Greeley?
A city in Colorado 50 miles north of Denver with roughly 30,000 more people than Missoula. And a college about the same size as u of Montana. I don't know it can't be all that bad.

Never heard of it. Sounds like Fargo. I've heard of Denver, though.

And there will still be 13,000 more fans there than Eastern has ever had in its dump. Just sayin'.

... According to NCAA stats, Arkie-State averaged 23,007 per game home attendance (six games) in 2015. (That's over 1,100 less than the Griz averaged last year.) Pathetic as the State attendance is, it was better than the whole Sun Belt, which averaged -- across the conference -- 17,482 per home game.
Compare that to average BSC attendance in which only the MT schools top 10,000. Be careful what you label "pathetic".
A should have said "pathetic for FBS," I suppose. Although they are #88 in FBS home-game attendance, meaning there are nearly forty FBS teams that do worse -- so you may have a point :)

Other FBS Examples:
Michigan = 110,168 (no surprise there)
Rutgers = 47,723 (pretty damn good for a not-very-good team ... but hosting strong opponents that people want to see)
UConn = 28,224 (not bad, considering their on-field performance since moving up)
Toledo = 20,842 (surprising, since Toledo has had decent to pretty good teams)
Now these are truly pathetic:
Ball St. = 7,974 (next to lowest)
Eastern Mich. = 4,897 (worse among FBS ... I've seen junior high games draw better than that)

Haha, this has nothing to do with Eastern, I just find it funny you guys are making fun of two schools who are pretty decent mid majors in the FBS, when you guys are playing MVS on Saturday.

And everyone knows Eastern needs a new stadium/stands...no argument here, our visiting side is a dump...

Boise State used the we'll play at home and any time to get on National Television model. They knew what it meant, decreased ticket revenue and in game sales for the added and more lucrative TV contracts. They knew it was going to make Bronco Stadium a Mausoleum for games at odd hours and days. Of those games that I attended on those games, I don't think they had more than 15,000 in attendance (though always reported in paid attendance of more than 20 or 25,000) for those games. Awful in game atmosphere to be honest. Most wouldn't commute from Twin or Pocatello when they knew it was going to be on ESPN.

BSU like the UM has a huge commute crowd for games, but the added bonus like the UM as well, is that those empty seats are bought and paid for already. So many of those games the TV contract represents extra money in the coffers whereas for the Sun Belt it represents money not had.

Fast forward to 2016 Boise. You'll see a whole different picture suggesting that the end justified the means.

Oh I agree completely. For BSU it worked, they got incredibly lucky as well because their success on the field made them a marketable product for TV. Few, and I mean few, transition schools were able to do what BSU did. So when you look at Sun Belt, former WAC schools, and MAC schools there is a bit of a purgatory they live in. To get your brand recognized you do have sell your soul a bit. I just don't think it'll bring the same type of returns that BSU was able to enjoy.

There might be five or ten schools along with BSU have seen a breakthrough that lower level purgatory for short time periods. TCU being the other comparative to BSU, the rest (Marshall, Central Florida, Northern Illinois, others) haven't been able to sustain that national profile.

So? Even P5 schools play bad FCS teams all the time.

And I think other posters are just saying that if our FBS life would be playing Arkansas PB on a Wednesday night, then what's the point?

That's the smell of money...Colorado has it, and spreads it around.

Fresno State is another that tried the body bag bonus game, and now?

I don't agree. Certainly, not over time at least. People just couldn't drive to Missoula, miss work, pay to stay overnight, and miss work the next morning. Locals would also be impacted by work. Watching on tv would work just fine for many. Also, some fans like myself don't go particularly excited by playing schools like Wyoming or Colo. St. If the Griz weren't winning, that would have decrease attendance. Plus, some fans like myself think night games suck.

Let's see how excited fans are about mid-way through the 2nd period Saturday.

But hey, at least we'll win, right? I mean, that's all that matters....

Yeah, the "but what if we don't win all the time?!?!" people reek of insecurity and the argument is so small-minded it's not even worthy of retort.

Georgia Southern plays 12 games this year. Exactly THREE are on a Wednesday or Thursday night. Two of those three are on ESPNU (plus their Saturday game against App State is on ESPNU). It ain't like the entire conference is relegated to Wednesday nights...talk about much ado about nothing. Looks like Ga Southern and App State have longer term visions than how many people are going to be there Saturday and who would go out. What a ridiculously short-term view of things.

It appears the Wednesday night thing is working for them anyways. There is a current two page thread about the game on a Montana message board because they were able to watch the game. On top of that 500k viewers tuned into watch a random FBS game on last night, and thats competing with a major league baseball playoff game...It's good exposure for both programs and it was a good game.

Wasn't most of the discussion about attending on Wed. night game, not watching on tv? My belief is that some Griz fans watched only because they were familiar with Georgia Southern from when they were in FCS. That's the only reason I watched some of the game, plus I wanted them to get beat, and they did.
