Not a Good Day to be a Beaver

I realize losing two games with 16 and 10 point leads in the second half is not good. But you gotta feel bad for our former coach Wayne Tinkle. The same W. tinkle who was the darling of the collegiate basketball world last year by not only winning the PAC 12 Championship but making it to the Elite 8.
Tonight the Bev’s had a halftime lead of 13 points only to lose to those pesky Cougars of WSU by 6 points. And the worst part...drum roll please....this was their 15th STRAIGHT LOSS. From the looks of the crowd on TV there couldn’t have been more than 1,000 people there unless they were hiding behind the cameraman/person.
Wayne was always a warm, friendly and cordial person to those who knew him. Just his stature alone made you look up to him. But I was never real fond of his brand of basketball scheme. Way to much one on one with everyone else waiting for someone to make a move. I know Wayne got a big extension after last years run but it’s always the small print that gets you in the end. I hope he gets back on track next year or we could be down two former Griz players PAC-12 coaches.

I think Waynes job is safe for now and I do believe as long as Wayne is moderately successful in Corvallis, he'll have that job for as long as he wants it. His team this year just wasn't that good and the margins in the Pac12 are pretty small between good and abjectly terrible. A person could have made the argument had it not been for the deep run by OSU last year, his job might have been at risk following this year.

Wayne's style is in many ways, Travis's style and you hear similar criticisms coming from their fanbase that you hear here. Possession oriented, defensively focused and offenses that are geared to force teams to defend and get high percentage outcomes. His teams haven't been able to do any of the three very well all year, similar to Travis, and the outcomes have had a predictable outcome.

Not just Wayne's or Travis' style. How long has it been since this was NOT our style?

I have watched the Beavers a few times this year. Obviously they have had their share of injuries and missing players. I think they had 8 scholarship players available last night and only 7 available a few nights earlier. That alone will create problems both offensively and defensively which they have obviously had yet they have been in quite a few very competitive games. I am a big Tinkle fan but they have definitely had their problems with a thin roster being available.

I am not a coach so take my observations with a grain of salt. But IMO this is what I have seen especially last night.

Their big man is not very athletic and cannot hedge a screen on defense. Last night was a perfect example as he would go to the top of the circle and the guard would either go past him for an easy layup or their center would roll to the basket and the Beaver center couldn't get back to cover him or be in position to grab a rebound. The weak side forward sometimes would collapse in an effort to help out and WSU would pass to the corner and their best 3 point shooter would shoot an uncontested 3. Flowers from WSU only went 6 of 10 from 3 against them and finished with 27 points. Why they couldn't or didn't adjust was very frustrating.

Between Anderson and Bannon we can, and do, hedge screens much better and way more efficiently than the Beavers do as both of them are much more athletic than the Beaver center.
