Cost of attendance, proximity to metro areas with terrible FBS programs and then mix in some oil money and big boosters. If NDSU wasn’t a powerhouse something would be seriously wrong. Move up to FBS and find out how irrelevant you would be. Another middle of the pack program. Relish your position in FCS. It is great. You can’t win games in Missoula, but you are great. Other programs will catch up with NIL and then you will cry in your gravy. Until then, be happy your team plays in a warm and terrible dome. Your fat ass won’t get cold until you play in a real stadium.

That's the only reason they haven't left yet, and let them admit it. They think that the Big Ten should roll out the red carpet and bring them in there. That's what all the BS is about them claiming they're a top 15 now, because they believe Sagarin rankings don't lie.

Where are the sell outs in the regular season over there though? The money keeps pouring in but the fans seem to be complacent in increasing volume. The only time they show up is for the championships.

Minnesota has underachieved for generations. Most Bison players wanted to play for the Gophers but the Gophers didn’t recruit them. The Gophers failures have contributed more than anything to the Bison dynasty which is dying off. SDSU and now UND have caught up with NDSU.
 
Minnesota is like Utah State. Underachieving with a lackluster fan base. Would Minnesota win the FCS championship? Utah State? Wyoming? They are bowl eligible after all

Minnesota should be one of the better teams in the Big 10, until recently they were the only D1 program in the state and it is a very highly rated school.

Minnesota suffers from the same situation as Washington and a lot of big schools in a big city with an NFL team. The Gophers are not the top dawg in the city unless the Vikings really suck and the Gophers are really, really good. It's the one thing that is special about college football at Montana - there isn't an NFL team within an 8 hour drive. In Montana, the Grizzlies are the NFL.

Good point. NDSU has a small stadium and doesn't have top attendance. In 2024 regular season attendance, UM was 2d (to Jackson St) and averaged 25,845. NDSU was 10th and averaged 16,789, which was less than 90% of capacity. UM averaged 102% of capacity.

Looks like even the Bison fans don't want to watch their team anymore. Too boring.
