North Colorado U @ Griz

GRIZ had one 3 ball and Kendal had 2 points for the game. Shit happens.

But that shit won’t happen again.

VERY BAD NIGHT
Shooting. According to the ESPN stats, the Griz slightly won the rebound battle, did well on steals and forced turnovers, and had a good assist total. They even scored more points on fields goals than the Bears. The Griz lost this game from the three-point line (made one versus five for UNC) and on foul shots made: 7 versus 18. Perhaps credit the UNC defense on the treys, but the foul-shot differential says the Griz can't defend without taking fouls ... the same story noted before. The number of fouls called was not that different: 18 against the Griz versus 14 against the Bears. But they got 26 foul shooting attempts versus 11 for the Griz.

We couldn’t make layups, or 3 pointers. They made all the tough shots in the paint.
DCH is going to have an outstanding career as a Grizzly. Manuel picked an awful night to go cold

Lot of shots went half way down and rattled out plus missed bunnies. We were out schemed though. After Manuel had 30 down there they obviously decided to take that away. They know he won't beat you off the bounce and stayed right in his grill and stuck to him like glue on switches. We could only think of one wide open shot he had in the first half and he's deadly when set and open. Well planned by their staff and well executed by their guys and we couldn't adjust or failed to adjust.

They were climbing back into it and the crowd was getting jazzed mid way in the second when Vasquez had a steal and then muffed the lob pass to Manuel when it would have resulted in a tie or a one possession game. Kind of let the air out of the building and for the first time in a home game that I've seen they panicked a bit. A few minutes of bad shots and defensive breakdowns and we were down a dozen, game over.

NoCo is a good team, deep and experienced with a very good player in Radebaugh. Along with us one of the better Ds in the league. The Griz didn't have their A game and they aren't good enough to beat them without it. They can learn from it for the rematch most likely next Friday.

Would you apply these comments to the Lady Griz Mr. CleanHouse ?

VERY BAD NIGHT

Well coachedyeah, but i wouldnt really say bad night as much we just got stuff by thier Defense. Kind of like when you face a team that just over matches you OLine in football and causes everything to look weak and out of sink on offense. I think hitting some tough outside shots would have helped, but we just didnt have the game plan to overcome or neutralize how they were pushing on us

We were out hustled, out passed & out shot. UNC played better D than us, out shot us from free throw line, had less Turn overs, and without looking it up, probably had more rebounds. They were just better.
Not sure how many teams we would beat shooting like we did tonight.
Tough home loss.
Good news is, we can play better.

Go Griz!

Agreed - even on a lot of the hustle plays, the ball didn't really bounce the Griz way until the last few minutes. By then, it was too late. Tough shooting night (I counted at least a dozen shots that were halfway down and popped back out), and untimely turnovers. Almost every time the Griz got the ball after forcing a turnover or came out with the ball out of a timeout, they turned the ball over. It was just brutal.

Credit to NoCo for going out and taking it. One thing that everyone seems to forget - NoCo's D has probably been the best D in the conference outside of the Griz the last few years. It is something that they don't really get a ton of credit for. Even when the Griz were moving the ball well, they were right on just about every single rotation.

On to the next. Hopefully they'll beat the Dunderbirds on senior night. It is all about perspective, right? If you told anyone that the Griz would have been in first place all year and right in the thick of it during the last week of the season for a 3rd Regular Season Conference Championship in a row, I'm willing to bet they'd take that. I think the last time a team won 3 in a row (regular season) was...Idaho in the early 80's?

Anyway, hopefully Dahlberg will be packed (I'm guessing general admission will be. It was last night) for senior night to send out Sayeed and Jared with a bang. I'm damn proud of this young team and damn proud of the coaching job TDC has done this year, as well as Sayeed's leadership. Let's kick some Dunderbird ass, then run through the conference tourney in Boise! Go Griz!

A lot of good, thoughtful posts here.

I agree the turning point of the game was when Vasquez tried the lob for the slam.

But mostly I agree with MMF. Damn proud of this team. Everyone of us would have taken this in a heartbeat after the loss to Tech. And I still think they're the favorite to win in Boise.

There are games like this and you hope they don't happen all that often when the games are as important as this.

A few observations from the land of pluto last night.

1. Less than the defense on Manuel, which was exquisite, was the inability for the Griz to get out and run and stretch the floor. Early on, it was very apparent that NC's offense 4 out or 4 high, had two principal benefits one offensively and one defensively. The offensive benefit is that it took Mack Anderson and Samuelson out of the the game defensively as help defense. DeCuires methodology was to prevent 3 balls, but the adjustment was to run slip screens until the cattle came home. More Kyle Owens, smaller line ups. Solid adjustment offensively by NoCo. The defensive benefit was missed shots or turnovers had no run out. No easy baskets. Because there was no flow up and down the floor, the game slows down. The principal beneficiary of the game that is stretched out? Manuel.

2. The Griz seem to get games where they see or get a player high on the irrational confidence scale. Radebaugh in a five minute stretch in the second half threw up four shots, three of them really low percentage, that all went in. Two were three's late in the shot clock that absolutely destroyed the momentum the Griz built. The other was an opposite leg fall away with a hand in the face after he was stopped on dribble drive. He had 8 points in that stretch where the Griz went from up two to down seven or so in a short span of time.

3. As it was noted elsewhere by others, this was one of those games where it appeared that no one wanted to shoot the ball. Two players in double figures, 90% of the offense went through Pridgett. Lots of opportunities to catch and shoot, but rather they deferred all night. A lot of that was related to NC's defense, but that was the most passive night of offense we've seen in a while.

Hopefully we'll get some opportunities in the conference tournament to right wrongs, but NC was the last team I wanted to see on the same side of the bracket. No matter what, were going to have to win 3 games in 3 nights to go back to the NCAA tournament. That doesn't change. Just the path is significantly more difficult.

this was one of those games where it appeared that no one wanted to shoot the ball.

Agreed, 24. The GRIZ were tight as the skin of a 75 year old actress after a face lift. It happens to young teams in big games, particularly when they are the ones squarely wearing the bullseye. Some of the best coaching I ever received was that in crunch time, you WANT the ball; you want to be THAT guy. But it takes time to learn and truly believe it.

Good news is, the GRIZ travel to Boise without having to pack the bullseye. Time for someone else to wear it for the first time in 3 years.

Some of that too is the young guys learning when TDC is fine / trusting of them to take the open shot (even if early in the shot clock). One of the main things that TDC always hammers home is don't settle for a "good" shot when you can make a couple passes and get a "great" one. It takes guys a bit to learn that sometimes the initial open shot is a "great" shot (even if early in the shot clock). Right now, guys who shoot early tend to be Sayeed, Timmy and Kendal. My guess is as the young guys get more comfortable and gain more of TDC's trust - they'll be more confident pulling the trigger on those early shot clock "great" shots.

I have been to almost all Griz games live this year. That was a tough loss but Northern Colorado is an impressive team. They have a solid inside presence and Radebaugh is just such a great player on both ends of the court. It is a tough matchup for this young Griz team. That being said it is always tough to beat a team three times and if Griz play against them in the tournament and play as an underdog and not as tight they have a legitimate shot to beat them. I still think this team has exceeded expectations this year.

To win the tournament our freshmen have to play like sophomores. And last night, Carter-Hollinger did.It looked to me like he's picking up a few of Sayeed's low-post moves. If he incorporates those into his game, he's going to be unstoppable down low.

Of course, Manuel is not going to be held to two points in any game in Boise.

But credit Northern Colorado. And while they lose Radebaugh next year, they have a dy-no-mite recruiting class coming in--seven-foot center, power forward, wing, point. They'll be good next year too.

...# 4 had his worst game as a griz...
...better last night than next week...
...started bad never got any better...
...so looking forward to his rebound...

... 8-) ...

Despite several of the comments I don't think the guys played that poorly.

They sure as Hell SHOT POORLY, but otherwise didn't play that bad. They were missing all the 3's and way too many of the 2's. Uncharacteristic for these guys. No. Colorado has a good team and played very well. Combine that with the worst shooting night of the year for the Grizzlies and it's impressive they still had a shot at the end. That is my two bits.

I'm going to disagree on DJ. He had some great plays last night, but he had multiple bad turnovers that killed momentum. He will get that cleaned up and I hope sooner (like in the tournament) rather than later. He's not the only one to blame. NCU is one of the more complete teams in the conference. Can't wait until the Griz get them again.

Great summation, saw it the same way. They seemed a little tight to start and Pridgett was forcing it early. We were shredded on pick and rolls the whole first half (Radebaugh and that other guard are very good at it, wish it was in our arsenal) but played decent D beside that in the 1st. They shut down Manuel and made plays when they were needed and we didn't. Too much for this team on this occasion. I think that Idaho team is the only team in conference history to 3 peat as regular season kings.

No matter how it ends it's been a fun year to watch the Griz. They had to replace studs with new, unproven, blood. Even pedestrian fans should tip their hat to this group.
