Non Conference Scheduling

What demon possessed AD Haslam when he scheduled the University of Washington a few years ago? Maybe he was on vacation at the time as it seems so out of character. Since, we have seen a steady stream of cupcakes on our schedule except Ferris State. These weak opponents don’t prepare the team for the conference schedule as they aren’t prepared to compete against a quality team like Ferris State. Most (maybe all) of you enjoy watching the Griz run up the score against a team like Utah Tech and you puff out your chests about how great the team is when they win. The better option is schedule at least one quality FBS team every year.

Before you complain too much about the Griz schedule, go look at everyone else's schedule. Both MSU and SDSU scheduled these types of games as well. NDSU's non-conference wasa bit stronger with games against EWU, Maine, and Central Arkansas. But they have also been known to schedule Pioneer League teams in the past, and Maine looks pretty terrible this year so that win is meaningless.

My only complaint is scheduling a D2 because it gains you nothing. However even SDSU played a D2 this year in Western Oregon. They just happened to play a bad D2 and were able to run the score up a whole bunch which looks better to the pundits but ultimately doesn't prove much.

And as far as scheduling quality FBS teams, it all comes down to the money. Most of them won't pay us enough. We went to Washington because they paid us $675,000. The end.

Spanky, please list the posters who have "puffed up their shirts" and bragged about how great a team we are. I believe most are happy we have won 3 times but no one has proclaimed us as great.

Next years non-conference schedule looks interesting with some better quality teams with games scheduled at home against Missouri State and Western Carolina and on the road against North Dakota. Not sure where Morehead State fits into this conversation but seems like a step in the right direction and certainly an upgrade over this years non-conference schedule ...

For our budget, it makes FAR more sense to play games at home. We know that we make millions from a home game, and that revenue covers losses for the whole rest of the athletic department. Sometimes a team like Washington is willing to pay us enough to go there, but those teams would rather schedule worse FCS teams for the same reason people didn't like us scheduling Ferris.

We need to play teams that will come to Missoula or schedule a home and home. It is just an economic reality.

This ground has been covered repeatedly. Scheduling is difficult for UM for many reasons. Which include, but are not limited to:

1. Location - Missoula ain't easy or inexpensive to get to

2. Home games - we gotta have 6 or fans would burn the place down.

3. Money - UM makes far more on a home game than they would get for a "payday" from a non-power FBS team.

4. Money2: UM pays its department's bills with revenue from home games.

5. H&H: most programs demand a home and home if they are going to schedule Montana. See #2-4 to see why that isn't viable for UM

6. Location2. We play in a region with very few programs

7. FBS. Kent has stated he likes to play P5 programs every 3rd year or so. There was really only one option (P12) and that's now the 2 Pack, so.....

8. WaGRIZ: one look at our home winning percentage will tell you why it's tough to get teams in here.

Look, everyone hates the DII games. But rumor has it that was a last-moment fill after an FCS team we had scheduled went FBS. (Which we should do to aid scheduling and pretty much everything else, but that's a convo for another day).

Spanky's forgotten more about remedial Econ than we'll ever know. There's your problem....

Spanky has zero understanding what hurdles are involved with scheduling OOC games, yet he whines and bitches and then whines and bitches some more. Then exaggerates facts to enhance his point. Repeat.
