Non-Cable Options in Missoula Area

GRIZFAN20

My wife and I are on the verge of dropping Charter after yet another rate increase. Last night we started looking at other options and are seriously considering going the internet streaming route like Hulu and Sling. However, I need some advise when it comes to picking up the all important Griz games.

In terms of picking up the local channels in Missoula to catch the games, are there any other options other than trying my luck with an antenna? If antenna is the only or best option, is there a particular one that works best (indoor, outdoor, certain brand?)

In addition, is there any way to get Root without having a cable or satellite subscription? I do not think so, but figured I'd ask.

Thanks!

Buy the digital antenna for local coverage with SWX (they have a streaming app as well if your in the area) but sadly no way to get Root through streaming because AT&T owns them, and for whatever reason they don't see it as a money making option for a regional sports network. Their DIRECTV Now streaming app doesn't even offer it.

I just got set up as a new customer with AT&T. Unlimited internet, Directv, and 2 cell lines, $160.00 or $180.00 per month (can't remember which amount is correct). Streaming Directv through a phone, tablet, computer, etc has worked well for me.

When Hulu was invented, I contacted Root to see when they would be on Hulu... I'm still waiting for that, as I also want Mariners games. I only want probably 5 other channels, so I'll never pay Charter or Satellite for that again

As far as an Antenna, I have had mine for 5 years since I ditched cable... It's nothing fancy, got it on Ebay for $8 or something, and it sticks to the wall behind the TV... You don't need an expensive gigantic antenna that mounts outside or in the attic unless you live in the middle of nowhere.

Mine picks up ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW, 5 PBS channels and some other mixed channels I don't watch...

When I was with Hulu, I figured out quickly if I wanted to watch blank show, I had to binge it because they remove the episodes quickly.

Amazon Prime is worthless to me, as it has original content I have never heard of, and wants to charge for movies and shows I like from the 80's

I had Sling when it was invented, and ESPN was great and crystal clear, except for MNF, which was unbearable to watch because it was grainy and it skipped. When informed I couldn't be connected to the Internet at all with any other device, it improved a little bit, but wasn't worth it to me

I just signed up for a trial with Directv Now, and it doesn't work at all... Literally, and there is no help available on the interface and their website won't even load... As long as I'm not charged

You can see my desperate attempts to get JUST what I want, and not everything I don't... I suggest doing what I did with the free trials on all those services, and form your own opinion

As far as cutting cable, for what I was paying Charter, that's more than 2 months of Mortgage payments for me a year... I don't miss it at all

Antennas are hit and miss where I live. Tried cheap ones and expensive ones. Just gave up. I have season tickets for home games and I go to a friend's house for away games. Oddly the only thing I missed after cutting cable, was football. I got the grizzly covered but other football I can do without.

My method for OTA antenna choices and availability.

Digital signal is line of site, it's not a radio bounce signal, this site lets you determine if site is blocked, mountain etc.

https://www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-elevationtool.html

reading instructions you will able to pinpoint where the towers are and if there are obstructions from your location to the tv towers.
Good luck

If you decide on Satellite DO NOT get directv, they absolutely suck compared to dish.

I would disagree, also if you have ATT you can get a 25 dollar video loyalty credit for unlimited data for having both. Directv is much superior technically and clarity wise. But that's just personal experience

In the past (and hopefully future), DirectTV's Audience channel has had the Root Big Sky games. And this channel is included in the streaming service DirectTVNow basic package at $35 / mo.

ATT/DTV have done terrific by me. Absolutely love the internet, cell, and tv services I have from them. :thumb:

I have not seen that confirmed anywhere. On the streaming option they have no way to make it regional so even if you got Audience it wouldn't have Big Sky games like they do with the satellite package.

dayday, I can only tell you that I live in CA and that for the past 2 years, the Audience network has broadcast all the Big Sky Root games. It's been awesome :D The Audience network does not have regional coverage - I first found this awesome tidbit from a Griz fan in Florida. Here's a previous post by AZDoc, who's been around here a lot longer than me (maybe dayday will be less sceptical of him).

This the previous discussion where Griz fans confirm that Audience carries to Root games. But I cannot confirm that they will do so this year...

Audience is also owned by ATT so they only show ATT owned content. They will show most the bigsky root games because they also own root sports. ATT doesn't own many other true content providers so I would wager a fair amount bigsky games are seen on audience as they don't base the audience network on regional broadcasting

I have had both and they are virtually the same technically, but where it matters, service, they are not even close. Say you want to add a sports pkg today to watch some games. Simple to do on both, just go online and add whatever you want. Now say you want to cancel said programming. With DISH just reverse the order, go online and cancel it, simple. Now with directv you can only cancel that programming by calling them up and waiting forever. When they finally do answer they do everything they can to get you to keep that and add a bunch of other crap. And forget talking online to someone also as they don't play that game either.
BTW, ROOT is also on DISH for something like $13 with about another 100 sports channels.
