No football for California schools this fall

I hear you. The funny part is the transplants aren't the ones who live in California. They clearly have a different mindset/values than people who choose to stay in California. So, probably not the best representatives.

Agree with your list. In general, I think some people in other parts of the country don't really grasp how large CA is and how different the parts are from one another. Put another way: flying into LAX, renting a car, and taking the kids to theme parks for four days probably doesn't give one the ability to form a valid opinion on the entire state, but we see that exact scenario all the time.

Absolutely. Incredible amount of variety in CA - landscapes from plains to high mountains, arid desert to deep forests, volcanic landscapes and rugged coasts. And of course most people who haven't spent much time there would be very surprised at just how conservative many areas are.

I spent 10 years working in N Cali and the geography is truly fascinating, coast to Sierra Nevada, North of the Bay Area/Sacto area it's about as densely populated as western Montana. Redding is the only big town and that's not very big at all. Unfortunately all that government makes it too expensive for a median wage earner. Everything is 50 percent more expensive: Housing, gas, utilities. sales taxes and income taxes. Was reading a piece that compared the median income of Nodak and Cali. Actually a bit more in Dakota, 67000 vs 65000. You can live well in North Dakota on that and get ahead for retirement. Even in rural Cali that ain't happening. I loved the temperate coastal climate in Humboldt and if sane people actually ran the place I could live there, but that ain't happening anytime either.

all this about the natural beauty of california, and nothing about the natural beauties of california? i'm not talking the la-hollywood plastic surgery types, i'm talking about the rest. more a variety than any person could ask for, and if you have a particular type, you'll find it in cali.

just sayin'.

I'd say median prices are more than 50% more expensive. What gets you a decent home where I went to grad school in CA get you a mansion on a lot of land in MT.

Yeah, but you can buy twice the size house on three times as much land in rural Mississippi versus Montana. That means Montana is overpriced. I mean, it’s nice to visit, but I can’t imagine paying Montana real estate prices versus rural Mississippi.

Certainly there are cheaper places, but there's a balance. Worth every penny for the land in Montana if you're a mountain/ wilderness junkie like me.

I hear that. As a non-shitty weather junkie, I think the same about my spot.

Hold up. Are we trying to say that COL generally correlates with desirability, but exceptions can apply? Brint and Mike need to see this data.

Haha. Fair point on the weather. I can tolerate it all to a large degree - I even enjoy it, in some weird way, and certainly take advantage of the better winter days to snowshoe. Still, I did originally have options to move to coastal Alaska, but decided the weather there might be a bit much for me.
