No down in front...

I stand and yell when the Griz are on defense, but I never understood people who stand when the Griz have the ball unless the ball is inside the 5 yard line of the NEZ (I also don't understand why people start the wave when the Griz are on offense). However, my question is, can you actually yell louder when you stand instead of sit? Does standing somehow intimidate the other team? Is there any tactical advantage to standing instead of sitting, or is it a psychological throwback to when you stood because you were in the student section? I am really curious as to how it helps the team to stand the whole game?

Grizbeer must be the guy telling everyone to sit down if he's asking those questions...
ha ha, no not me- as I said I stand on defense and O plays when the ball is near the endzone - and the people in front of me rarely stand, so there is that as well. I just don't understand what it adds to stand the entire game, and especially when the Griz are on O? I also have never understood the people who stand and raise their arms and turn around and look back at the crowd instead of the game. Are you more interested in being a cheer leader or watching the game? I always imagine people who stand the whole game are the same people who drive down Reserve Street 35 mph in the left lane. :P

Grizbeer makes perfectly valid points in my opinion. The standing while we are on "O" makes no sense. The wave when we are on "O" is detrimental to the team. I stand and scream like a banshee among the oldsters on the 50 yard line when it makes sense to, but the standing just to be standing argument is lost on me. I think it must satiate a passive-aggressive urge to feel righteous among those who are less powerful in society. Discuss! :D

I just found it interesting that no one said down in front, and yeah it was fricking cold in the shade all game, so standing was best, but the whole stadium seemed to be standing, which was kinda cool. I don't have a problem with people choosing to sit when the Griz are on offense but get up when we are on D, standing shows more support for your team, any person can go to a game and sit on their ass. But if you are going to stand on defense, you might as well just stand when we are on offense too. Hell most of us sat on our asses long enough on the drive to get to the Griz game, so let us stand! Let us Stand!!!

we stood the whole game against the Cats last year. im pretty sure most people in our NEZ section did the same...and we were absolutely never asked to sit. in fact one cheeky old fellow gets mad if you sit while the Griz are on D...

I don't stand the whole game but most of it. Whenever something big happens and I jump to my feet the woman who has the seats beside mine looks at me like she's scared I'm coming to kill her or something....makes me laugh.

Back in the day we used to stand for the whole game at Dornblazer but that was mostly just because it made self-rescue easier if the bleachers collapsed.

 and you had to keep moving or you could freeze to death from the wind. Honestly though, I attended a couple games there as a freshman but never stayed for an entire four quarters. It was like watching soccer, except colder.

the reason everyone stands at the litterboxes is because it is frozen fricken solid. It's not a choice; the ice on those bleachers would freeze your ass cheeks like the little kid in the Christmas Story movie. I sat in litterbox-south and it got no sun and appeared to have received no attention from any MSU staff for weeks to clear the ice. The steps were damn treacherous
Last week the cat box the seats were covered with ice and my son and I stood the whole game. Everything had a sheet of ice on it, from walking into the stadium to the stairs. But I would rather stand, cheering is much more fun when standing.

Did not expect to have this happen at Bobcat Stadium, I was in the front row sitting with all Cat fans, and none of us sat down the whole game. Nor was anyone told to sit down. Their crowd was surprisingly loud. I wish Washington-Griz would go back to being like this with people other than the student section and section 131 standing the whole game.

We are very loud sitting down thank you...remember not everyone is 20 or 30 something and can stand for 3 hrs. In Bozo last week we were seated in a section with a bunch of rude & drunk sCats that would not sit and rather insisted in blocking our view for 60-70% of the game.

Yeah, we're in the same place. We have an elderly family member, a UM grad, who is in his 80s and one of the best Griz fans ever. But he can't physically stand for long periods. We try to get one of the handicapped spots when we're able to get to a game, but there are so few of those that it's hard to get one. I understand why people like to stand and cheer, but it's really tough on those who aren't physically able to stand.

But, from this thread, the fact that he now can't stand after 60+ years of standing and cheering his heart out for the Griz makes him a lazy old jerk in some of your eyes when he asks people to sit down, I guess. He should probably just stay home where he belongs, right? Why do those old farts want to come to the game anyway, right? :(

Seems like a good time for a repost:

Seems like we had the same complaints back in '85.

The stadium condition was horrible the ice was dangerous. I've never seen it that bad at Wa-Griz. The staff didn't know the facilities and we were misdirected 3-4
times and finally made it to our seats seconds before kickoff.

Good post!! Frankly I am a Griz now and forever. The respect for those who have come before sadly continues to erode. Maybe King Royce needs to institute a manditory first year manners class.
