I heard that Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Athlete of the Week and The News Tribune (TNT) Athlete of the Year, Nick Webster (incoming freshman) can't walk-on to the football program 'cause U of Montana has a limitation on players. Really?

There are limits on the number of walk-ons who can start practicing before school is in session, perhaps that's limit that is being referred to?

It's not a limit on walk-ons but on total players in Fall Camp.

this must be a new rule as I grew up in the Midwest and Nebraska used to brag about having so many walk ons....of course unlike iowa at the time they had the money to equip each player with all the gear etc...150 or so stands out in my mind on the total team.....

You have to be "invited" to fall camp and there are a limited number of slots. It's been like that in DI for quite some time.
I think once the team starts practicing for its first game the roster can open up. Webster wouldn't be the first late comer to have this issue.

Cool, it makes sense.

Does anyone know when walk-ons can participate?

Actually, walk-ons can start practicing anytime, subject to the pre-school roster limit (of 90 or whatever it is). When school starts, then everyone else can practice. I don't know if there is any roster limit after school starts. A "preferred" walk-on is someone who is told he will be able to practice when practice starts (and will be within the 90? roster limit).
