NFL Draft – FCS Chances?

Draft program getting closer. Personally, I very much doubt that any FCS player will get drafted tonight. Here's an opinion from Pro Football Network on a Griz player:
Omar Hicks Onu, CB | Montana

Positives: Athletic cornerback with the size and speed to play at the next level. Battles opponents throughout the action, plays with a nasty attitude, and possesses solid ball skills. Stays on the receiver’s hip out of breaks and has a burst out of his plant. Has opposing quarterbacks purposely throwing away from him and easily stays downfield with receivers.

Negatives: Slow reacting to receivers’ moves off the line and loses a half-step in transition. Marginally productive during his time at Oregon State.

Analysis: Hicks Onu possesses the size and speed and flashed enough ball skills to play on Sundays.
Interesting, since he's not been mentioned at all (that I could find) anywhere else. Of course, the guy is not saying Onu will get drafted.
He is the reason most of the action went Ford's way. And his absence a big reason we lost to JMU.

Did not watch the whole draft program, but looked in to keep up. (Listening to Kifer acting like unexpected -- by him -- picks are a personal insult gets old after awhile.) From some of the comments by the panel, I'd say Onu will be given a chance, and perhaps even get drafted. It seems that solid corners are hard to find, and most teams are desperate to get some. A CB that "encourages" the QB to throw somewhere else could be a valuable addition.

Here's another opinion from that web site:
Dylan Cook, OT | Montana

Positives: Nice-sized college left tackle with potential on the blind side. Keeps his head on a swivel, always looks for someone to hit, and works well with teammates. Quickly sets up in pass protection, keeps his feet moving, and is fluid sliding laterally. Displays good lateral blocking range and stays square.

Adjusts and redirects to pick up the blitz. Slides his feet exceptionally well. Displays outstanding vision, sees the blitz, and picks up stunts. Patient in pass protection and seals defenders from plays. Blocks down well and smothers opponents on running downs.

Negatives: Lumbers around the field and isn’t quick out to the second level. Not a dominant run blocker who moves opponents off the line. Possesses short arms and small hands.

Analysis: Cook was a strong-side blocker on the college level but has the ability to move to the left side in the NFL. While his short arms are a limitation, Cook deserves consideration at guard at the very least.

Yep. I think he and Robertson will be the two most missed pieces of the defense this year. VERY difficult to just plug and play….

Robertson was a baller, arguably the biggest loss to graduation.

With, as noted elsewhere, Watson drafted, that makes three FCS players going in the first 34 picks. But we're now past where some people were projecting that Andersen would go.

Falcons just took Troy with Nakobe Dean still on the board.

Is this real life?

I'm happy for Troy. Honestly, he would have been available in the 3rd round still.

I'm happy to see a Montana kid, even if he played at Moo U, get drafted, but holy smokes. I thought the 4th round was reasonable and wouldn't have been shocked to see him in Round 5 or 6.

Agree

It goes to show that NFL programs just might see things differently than eGriz and Griznation!

Running really fast in the 40 at the combine adds 2 rounds to your draft status. I thought 75 was about right and if injuries and lack of time at position figured in it may be closer to the 95-100 range.

After the good start (four FCS in the first two rounds), it went dead in the third. Finally picked up another in the 4th round: Pierre Strong, Jr. from South Dakota State. Don't recall him being mentioned at all.

And we have our first (to my knowledge) draftee from below D-I. Where the heck is Fayetteville State?

Cordell volson ot from ndsu taken by the bengals in the 4th round with pick no 136 overall.

That's two guys taken from ndsu in the first four rounds, and 4th player taken from the mvfc thru round 4.

Matt waletzko ot from u of North Dakota fighting Hawks taken in the 5th round at pick 155 overall by the Dallas cowboys

The 5th pick from the mvfc this year so far thru 5 rounds.

A string of fcs guys taken recently in the 5th round...
zyon mccullom of Sanford taken by Tampa Bay with pick no.157

Montrell Washington of Samford taken by Denver broncoswith pick no.162

Braxton Jones of southern Utah taken with the 168th pick overall by the Chicago bears.

Fifth round looking good for FCS, with 5 selected. Too few picks left to get another one in this round, but who knows? FWIW: One we've discussed on here was included ... Braxton Jones (SUU) went to "Da Bears."

Haven't made a full count, but right now it looks like a dozen FCS so far.

Early (#6) in the sixth round and we have another FCS draftee ... Christian Benford, a CB from Villanova.

South of Bentonville (home of Wally World) in NW Arkansas.

Herder’s keeping a tally. It’s at 24 right now.
