Next up 2/20 vs. msu

I was fortunate to have witnessed one of the best performances by a Freshman in GRIZ history. Amazing the game Gfeller had was lost in the shuffle, due to amazing performance of Michael Oguine, AKA Michael OMG!!!

Early in the year, with both Wright and Breunig struggling, the GRIZ would have likely been blown out of a game. Not now, the great shooting of Gfeller, and the outright offensive dominance of Oguine sure put that notion to rest, and then some! 3feller and Michael OMG were flat out amazing and fun.

Even more encouraging, MSU took away the GRIZ ability to effectively swing the ball consistently with passing. That is not easy to do, and MSU deserves credit for it. That forced Travis to turn to Oguine for isolation plays, and OMG delivered the goods with a GRIZ win.

Despite absolutely horrible officiating (against both teams) that turned out to be a terrific game to be part of. Oguine and Hall put on all time great performances as true Freshman going at it and carrying their teams, when needed. Both those players are very special players with pro careers ahead of them. Terrific games by Gfeller and Colbert as well.

Final comments: Thank you Oguine and Hall for making this a great game to be part of.

I had forgot to mention that I am pretty impressed with coblbert's ability to deliver the sneaky arm shiver when driving to create separation. He did it multiple times last night without getting called for an offensive foul (in fact, he did it once where he drew a foul where the replay showed our player didn't touch him at all and went straight up.) Just a little extension of the forearm as he stops, pivots and shoots. Our smaller guys should take note.

Both TD and Fish should be pissed. Not even about the outcome of the game, but because with officiating like that in a big game it makes for boring basketball. In the biggest game of the year in the State, with recruits watching, and with tons of great athletes....the OFFICIALS stood out. Terrible for both teams, terrible for all fans, terrible for all players, terrible for the BSC.

I've had basically that conversation with several people since Saturday night. I went to this game with my dad and midway through the second half I mentioned to him that it's not a good sign when I start getting bored at a Griz game. It of course wasn't UM's fault, but that was ridiculous. I consider myself about as big of a Griz fan as there is and I've sat through a lot of pretty terrible basketball games over the years. Saturday was just flat out boring for a good portion of the second half especially.

Here's what bothers me most about it though. We had 6500+ people come into the arena to watch our Griz play some basketball. Instead they watched referees call foul after foul after foul, etc. How many of the 6500+ were just casual fans that had heard good things about how exciting this team could be? How many of those casual fans are going to want to come back and pay their money to watch another whistle fest? I'll be back in two weeks to watch Martin Breunig play his last games in Missoula, but I seriously doubt a lot of those people will be joining me. That's a shame because he is a special player and deserves to go out in the best way possible.

Exactly. The worst part was on the majority of whistles the players and coaches genuinely couldn't tell who the foul was on when the whistle blew. On one play where a Bobcat player had blood on his arm, the whistle blew and everyone looked confused because they assumed there was another ticky tacky foul called. Sad.

The Missoulian did some nice photography; a good one of Fish showing his exasperation at an official.

I can echo what you said but one thing you missed is the kiddos. I have a 7 year old and he absolutely loves the Griz and college basketball. This season has been flat out awful and its due to these new rules. Its rare for a 7 year old to be able to sit through games and stay interested but my boy is one of them; until the last few games. When a 7 year old is complaining about "not letting them play," its getting bad. If you lose the kids, what kind of interest are you generating for the future of basketball. No kid wants to sit there and watch teams shoot free throws over and over and over. I know I dont pay money to watch that.

I am of the belief that its not ALL on the refs and they are just doing thier "job," but its more of the new rules The the NCAA has initiated where the players cant play any sort of aggressive defense. Its bad news for the future of college basketball.

That would be a great photo to add captions to. The guy was obviously pissed with the refs.
