Next up 1/9 vs. Sac. St.

Imagine Travis is rewarding this crew by keeping them out there. But I would love to see the reserves play out the game.

Oguine may have done the best defensive slap tonight ...

Wombats lost 77-70 tonight against Portland State, at home.

PSU's Forte had 26 pts and 11 rbds.

In Missoula, Forte was held to just 8 points, 6 rebounds.

As in football, defense wins games ...

Thought MB had a little nice one in the second half, with emphasis!

Surprised there is not more post game chat about this game. I just got home from the game. WOW, that was one of best displays offense and ball movement I have witnessed by the GRIZ. Walter Wright is a flat out stud as a playmaker, His 1st half was simply amazing. He only scored 2 points, but he dominated the game with penetration and passing. In my opinion, he played PG how PG is meant to be played. His ball handling is terrific as well. There were times when he was just toying with would be defenders.

Back to back games with him racking up the assists to so many teammates. Each of those games he could have had 15 assists. Oguine added 5 more assists, and Lopez I think had 3 assists as well. After watching Lopez get quality shots the previous game against PSU, I had a great feeling he was about to have a break out game. Sure enough, he had a career high in points, played great defense, solid on the boards, and dished out a few assists as well. I think we all saw why he is starting now? He just brings so many intangibles and versatility to this team. I expected him to start flirting with double figures in scoring, but never thought he would put up 20 plus points. It was nice to see him come through from the outside when Gfeller and Moorehead struggled some from 3.

I was very impressed with Martin Breunig's rebounding and leadership as well. He was very vocal and has very high expectations of every team member.

After the game I hung out and talked with other fans, players, and coaches. I met the new guys (Oguine, Wright, Moorehead, and Rorie) All of them were very humble, great attitudes, and complimentary of the team. Oguine's blocked shot was one of the most amazing blocked shots I've ever witnessed. Mainly because he is not very tall, but man that kid absolutely has some mad hops. The replay camera did not do that blocked shot justice. 2/3 to 3/4's of his arm was above the rim. He was definitely over 40" with vertical leap. The crowd was was in absolute shock in what they just witnessed. I will never forget that blocked shot, or the passing display the GRIZ put on. Also Oguines pass or air ball that led to Breunig's dunk was simply amazing as well.

After the game, I was standing behind the GRIZ bench, Travis spotted me as he put on his headphones for the interview with Mick, Travis acknowledged me with a head nod and huge smile, like I have never seen on him. I could tell he was so proud of his team. He and the staff have been preaching team work, ball movement, and passing from the get go. In back to back games, his boys did just as they have been preaching to them. Sharing the ball was contagious for his team. The results were enormous.

I did speak to Travis after the game, I told him that was the best game of ball movement and passing I have witnessed in a long time. He admitted he was a proud coach, but acknowledged the GRIZ left a lot of points off the scoreboard with missed bunnies and wide open perimeter shots. He feels they have a lot of room for improvement. He is excited to get Dunn back to good minutes. Dunn's wrist was hurting before the game, and the GRIZ did not want to chance him furthering the injury. I spoke to Dunn. He told me expects to be back playing next week and he was just glad his teammates played so well. He just wants to be healthy to help his team be even better.

Mick Holien (sp?) told me he is really enjoying having this team be part of his final season calling GRIZ games. He feels this team will send him off in style this season. He and Haslam feel this years guards are the most athletic guards the GRIZ have ever had, and it will only get better with Rorie and the recruits added to the equation next season.

I am so very impressed with this team and our guard play. This team is fun to watch. The GRIZ have 2 double double guys in Breunig and Wright. I won't be surprised if Wright averages over 7 assists per game in league play. He is the real deal. Like Breunig, he is worth the price of admission. Travis and the coaching staff know damn well how talented these guards are. These guards are starting to believe them too!!! Look out when Dunn is completely healthy and in game shape. Wright and Oguine are both playmakers. They do what I always wanted to see Cherry do and that is consistently make their teammates better by scoring and passing.

I am glad I got to witness this team live finally. Watching them on the computer does not do them justice. Folks this team is outright fun, deep, and talented. They are the real deal when it comes to Big Sky teams. I don't see much let down due to how cohesive this team has become the last 2 weeks. Very fun and well played basketball. Thank you GRIZ for a terrific night and for treating your fans of all ages so well after the game.
