Next up 1/21 vs. Idaho

Breunig (20) and Gfeller (14) were the only Griz in double digits. Gfeller led 3ptrs with 4 of 12. Moorehead had 2 of 5.

UM got 9/30 compared to 5/13 for Idaho on three pointers.

Had it not been for the "3 pt strategy," UM would have lost this game by a considerably larger margin. A very few more tries at it, UM would have won even with a rotten regular FG %. I think there is a take-away from what Travis attempted to do tonight.

Tough loss but really good to see them fight back and make it interesting. The question is, who on the team that is not named Breunig can get buckets inside? The zone the vandals were running had him double-teamed almost every time and no one else can find the hoop in the paint. Krslovic is missing, and the still-young Dejong looks lost.

Are you serious? Go on the road and win some conference games and turn around and play like that? WOW, very mediocre Griz team. Coaching, shooting the ball, and defending tonight was not good. Idaho would be blasted by decent D1 teams, and we lose at home to them. Agree?

Losing to the Vandals is just as hard as losing to State or Grills. It hurts.

As an embarrassed U of I alum, I couldn't agree more. I fucking HATE losing in ANY sport to the Vandals. HATE HATE HATE IT!!!

The first 10 minutes of the 2nd half...holy shit that was ugly. Couldn't hit anything. Couldn't hit layups, couldn't hit open 3s, couldn't hit open 5 ft jump shots, just looked absolutely awful. They fought back though and made it close at the end. Going 1-14 shooting in the first 12 minutes of the 2nd half (0-10 on the first 10 shots) we were lucky it wasn't totally out of reach.

Sanders for Idaho sure has stepped up his game since Callandret got injured. In the 3 games Callandret has missed Sanders has scored 33, 29 and now 27.

I expect the Griz will play MUCH better against EWU on Saturday. I don't see them having 2 clunkers in a row at home.

Yep. We are as good as anyone and I actually think our ceiling is higher than anyone in the big sky. Unfotunately due to our lack of overall experience we can drop a terd like tonight on anyone. This team also has a big win or two in their arsenal and almost already had one against the zags. Come tournament time next year we will make better decisions and not panic so much when shots arent dropping. We do need to find a replacement for Bruenig.

Well, Griz were just all over the place last night. There were a few moments of inspired passing, and some fumbles that really broke up what could have been scoring plays.

Travis sees that he probably has the best 3 pt team in the conference and intends to use it. It gets points, forces the defenders out, and opens up the inside. If you've got the shooters, you can't pass up that strategy. He really went to it last night in a big way. I don't think it failed.

The 3pt percentage was OK. At 30%, it was below the last six game average of 39%, but considerably above the last two games of 25% and 19%. UM has had two conference games so far with 55% 3pt accuracy, one at 43% and one at 39%.

Had Griz shot their FG average of the last 6 conference games (49%), UM would have had 81 points. Had they scored their lowest previous FG percentage (45%), they still would have won with 77 points.

Had Griz shot their average FG percentage of 48%, they still would have won the game even if the 3pt score was at 19%, the season low, scoring 72 points.

If Griz had shot their season averages in both FG and 3pt, they would have scored 90 points, a blow-out.

Even shooting the 30% 3pt percentage last night, the Griz could have won simply by upping the FG percentage to 34% (65 points). That 32% was just that bad and that crucial.

Idaho shot pretty well, 38% 3 pt, and 44% FG. But, they only launched 54 times compared to Montana's 86 shots. So that's why Montana could have easily won this game with even a slightly better (even if still dismal) FG success.

FT also made the difference, UM with 13 of 17, and Idaho 22 of 29, but both percentages were 76%, they just got more of them.

Idaho didn't win this. Montana lost it.

A generally uninspired game by the Griz, and poor shooting (32%). For most of the game, it just wasn't happening for UM. After a decent start, the Griz shooting disappeared and the team seemed listless. Both teams shot 32% in the first half. Then, a horrible shooting start in the 2d half for UM, and Idaho knocked down some shots early and shot about 62% in the 2d half. Idaho built a good lead.

Idaho's zone defense was good, and frustrated the Griz and slowed Breunig. Late in the game, with about 6 minutes to go, UM seemed to adjust, bringing Breunig out to the top of the key at times. This opened things up considerably. Idaho is a solid or good rebounding team.

UM took too many 3's. DeCuire confirmed that in the post-game interview. UM gave up too many offensive rebounds in the first half (7), but adjusted and gave up only 1 in the 2d half. Only 6 points scored by the UM bench. I wonder if Idaho's frequent soft fullcourt zone press caused UM some problems, in that the press often took 7 or 8 seconds off the clock on most possessions, giving UM less time to work its offense. Idaho got an early turnover or two off the press too.

UM got alot of steals, but didn't capitalize on them. Some key mistakes hurt. A technical by UM after a flagrant foul by Idaho. A charge by UM on a fast break with under a minute to go. The refs were spotty. Called way too many fouls, on both teams. The refs had the longest break I have ever seen in college basketball, to figure out the flagrant and technical. Must have been over 10 minutes.

The crowd of 3700 was pretty good much of the time. I haven't seen the Griz play like this for more than a short period of time all season. Don't know what was wrong. Idaho was okay, but not a great team. Easily beatable, and should have been beaten. Idaho is probably much better at full strength (2 starters out apparently).

As Sample's headline said, perhaps a wake-up call.

I'm puzzled by Travis's comments on three pointers. At 30%, that's a positive feature as its the equivalent of 45% shooting for FG. And 45% is just about the Griz conference FG percentage average so far this year (47%). So, it's not bad, not at all.

I'm sure everyone has this figured out, but here's a chart of what it means for various three point percentages in terms of what it takes to equal the points scored for ordinary field goals. As you can see from the chart, the 55% three point shooting that UM did a couple of weeks ago was extraordinary if compared with what it would have taken for two pointers to add up.

The problem last night wasn't too many three pointers. The problem was failed Field Goal attempts. If we hadn't been shooting the three pointers, and relied on just field goals, that would have been a disaster rather than a close score.

I was disappointed in the crowd. First of all, 3700 is a very generous estimate, and overall people seemed pretty lethargic. They came alive when the Griz got close late in the game, but sat on their hands during the introduction of the starters. The Idaho bench was louder than our crowd for much of the second half. Okay, I'll quit bitching now, but I hope people are ready to step it up against EWU.

The Griz players, when introduced, now just walk onto the court a few steps. No excitement, jumping, high-fiving. I can see why the crowd isn't very excited. The Idaho bench was good, but it's more than exaggeration to say they were louder than the UM crowd.
