Who will be coaching the Griz next year since a lot of people think Kennedy is on his way out. Is there another Hogan crony hiding in the woodwork? Maybe there is another so so coach about to be dumped by a big time school. Pete Gillen is probably on the way out at Virginia, I am sure he will lead us to the sweet 16, oh wait Kennedy is doing that. I am sure we can lure Mark Few from Gonzaga I mean we are after all the next Gonzaga. This is meant mostly as sarcasm but seriously the Griz basketball program is in a sorry state of affairs right now and not even Don Holst can be blamed.

Although I suppose if we had more than 2 players who have played for the Griz for 4 years, and 3 players more than 3 years, or if 6 of the 14 players on the roster had ever played for the Griz before this year, they might be more competitive and know how to play as a team.

Maybe Kennedy isn't the answer, but Holst without a doubt was not the answer. Those who mock Hogan's plan of being a sweert 16 team are probably the same ones who scoffed when Donavan proclaimed the Grizzly football team the "Team of the 80's", including the Missoulian writer who wrote they looked more like the crappy old team from the 70's. Donovan might not have gotten us there, but the objective was correct and now the Griz are the powerhouse I-AA team. It is ridiculous to say the Griz cannot be a sweet 16 team, or the next Gonzaga, or whatever.

You are right Grizbeer, its ridiculous to assume that the Griz have no chance of being the next Gonzaga. Back between 82 and 85 Gonzaga wasn't the Gonzaga they are today. In fact they were probably at that time hoping to be the next Iona. At that time Iona was a mid major powerhouse and had some very impressive records. Gonzaga was hovering just above .500 for those 4 seasons.

It could be Kennedy isn't the answer, but setting a goal like the sweet 16 shouldn't be frowned on. By the way, I'm not accusing anyone in this thread of doing that, but there have been quite a few people talking like that's not even a possibility and that Hogan is a idiot for even saying that. It may not happen anytime in the immediate future, but who knows...it gives them something to shoot for.

The Griz do have many players who have never played with eachother before this season, and I think that probably is causing some of the problems we see this year. They still have a chance of getting to the tournament this year though, and I'm sure they'll be much improved next year. I hope Kennedy doesn't decide to call it quits after this year. The recruits he has coming in for next year sound very good. Chances are at least a couple of them will redshirt though, but I bet they will be huge contributors once they start playing for the Griz.

I agree completely that one of our main problems is that most of the players haven't played together before. Only 2 of our 5 seniors (Cummings and Pederson) were recruited as freshmen. Venters has been here 3 years, Horne and Mansell have been here 2. Also in that time period we have lost 4 players for one reason or another who would still be playing including all three redshirts from 2000-2001 (Matt Lutdke, Sam Riddle, Eric Rose). The team has a lot of talent but its not meshing very well right now but I do see a good prognosis for the future. There are six young players players who are going to make for one heck of a squad when they're juniors/seniors. Dlouhy and Lynch are freshmen and everyone already knows what Criswell is capable of plus the other 3 sophomores look pretty promising (Easley, McKay and Seyfert).

To get decent players the program has to have money to be able to recruit them and travel to where they are at. All along Roundball club funds help them do that, but that wasn't near enough for what they needed. Now with the athletic dept. in debt for $900,000 that could be hard to do. Student fees will raise next year to try to cover the debt.

Next year the football team and basketball teams will be riding the bus to more games rather than flying to save money.
