Next Game – Prairie View A&M (Dec 17)

Got to wondering about the next game for the Griz ... against Prairie View A&M. The ESPN schedule shows the start time and lists the Griz as "home team" at a neutral location. The schedule at GoGriz has the location as Houston. So I asked myself: What's up with that?

Answer: It's a "holiday" tournament sponsored by an organization called "Coaches Against Racism." Here's a link to an article about the tournament. https://blogs.houstonisd.org/news/2022/12/08/hisd-to-host-coaches-vs-racism-hbcu-roundball-classic/

The Griz get PVA&M, while Texas Tech goes against Jackson State. I can't find anything about the structure of the tournament, so I don't know if there are any follow-up games, as you would have in an actual tournament. However, they only show a one-day schedule, so the one game may be it.

This might be one of the best teams UM faces all year With wins over Wash State, near wins over Northwestern and others, this is not your average small rural school. It promises to be a very good game if UM can rebound and guard the corners.

This is probably not an overstatement. Prairie View opened their season with a Christian college (neither NCAA nor NAIA, near as I can tell) and then an NAIA opponent. Then they somehow lured Washington State to campus, and pulled off an upset. Their only other D-I win was at Arkansas State, but – as you imply – they played their other opponents tough. Sagarin ranks their SOS at 74.72 (#102). For comparison, the Griz sit at 72.19 (#197). However, because the Panthers are 2-5 against D-I opponents, their Sagarin Rating is only #261, while the Griz are at 179. Not that big a deal in actual numbers, only a +4.13 for the Griz.

The venue – Delmar Fieldhouse – is no routine high school gym. It’s a general-use facility that can seat 5,000 spectators. It’s also located about 40 miles from the Prairie View campus, with a four-lane main highway for travel … so this will be a home game for the Panthers. FWIW: PVA&M enrollment is not that different from that for UM, a bit over 9 thousand.

If you factor in Sagarin’s home-court advantage allowance for PVA&M, this is a hair more than a 1-point plus for the Griz. Not a gimme by any means.

Bad time for finals week. Griz put together two impressive games and were gaining momentum, but now have a week off of games with finals. I have seen some less than inspired efforts from teams coming off of finals week. Hopefully they can get them out of way early in the week and get back to what’s important (I kid! I think?).
