As much as I don't like him, and as much as I didn't like the buyout, I still understand business decisions. The revenue exchanges were a wash yet we yielded 1 more home game which generated $400k in revenue. We have to have 6 home games on the regular schedule to balance the budget. Playoff games don't generate revenue for anyone except NCAA.

And they didn't have any of this figured out when they scheduled the game in the first place?

MSU isn't the Federal Government and can't print money to pay its bills

It appeared at the time the Cats were not telling the truth about this and that is still the case. And here's why: The Cat's excuse was that they needed to buy out NDSU for $100K and schedule a game with SMU and receive $300K so that they could net $200K. They say they did this because it was important to be able to schedule a 6th home game and they were able to use the $200K net gain to schedule and pay Monmouth to travel to Bozeman for the 6th home game. But it is clear and now it has been confirmed by Ash's statement in the recent article that that they could have scheduled a 6th home game without canceling NDSU. Ash stated that the income generated solely from the Monmouth game was $400K. They would have known that they would have generated a lot of revenue based on the revenue generated in the first game the prior year which was substantial. The revenue from the Monmouth game was more than sufficient to pay the $200K guarantee to Monmouth and it was unnecessary to cancel NDSU. And the amount of the extra revenue the Cats received in canceling NDSU and scheduling SMU is not that substantial for a D1 NCAA program like MSU which has about a $20 million athletic budget. You don't cancel a game like that - certainly it had a big impact on NDSU's budget and they only got to play 10 games that year! Ash wanted to cancel because the certain loss to NDSU would have counted against the Cats for playoff considerations - the loss to SMU had no effect and the Cats probably felt they had a chance to beat SMU which would have helped for playoff purposes. The whole thing stinks. There is a reason the Cats players do not like Ash.

The financial analysis is b******t. Coach Ron Ash says they bought out NDSU, then scheduled Monmouth and SMU and ended up $400K to the good. Only problem is that he is saying that they canceled one game then scheduled two. Guess what, only one of those games replaced NDSU, you don't get to replace one game with two. One of those games (either Monmouth or SMU) would have happened anyway and you can't take the revenue from it to justify running away from NDSU.
