New transfer from Boise State: Jamal Wilson

Boise runs a pro-style offense like the one Montana is transitioning to. Kefense was the quality control guy for that offense when he was at Boise. Maybe he sees a role on offense for this transfer.
Since when are we transitioning to a pro-style offense? Did you watch the last scrimmage? JJ was in the shotgun all day.

Adding more under center plays isn't what I'd call "transitioning to a pro-style offense".

Call it whatever you want. If you look at the background of the Griz coaches on offense, the one thing they all have in common is experience with the pro-style offense. Gragg (NFL- 49ers), Green (nfl Baltimore), Hynson (boise, w.wash), Rannings(San Diego--Harbaugh), Delaney (CSU), Myers (W. Wash., Washington) -- all come from pro-style systems. When Hynson and Gragg talk about being able to use the same terminology, they're talking about speaking in pro-style terms.
I suppose they could set all the experience aside and stick with the spread option, but they might as well go with the veer or the wing T. The experience is with the pro-style offense.
the shotgun formation is well within the pro-style offense, particularly the way Boise State uses the pro-style.

"Jamal Wilson is an outstanding fullback, who is transferring from Boise State because they are not going to employ a fullback in their new offense," Delaney said. "He's the type of player who can make a difference in a two-back set.

"We feel fortunate to add two young men, who we expect to have a lot of accomplishments on and off the field," Delaney said. "I think both of them can make big contributions to our 2013 Grizzly football team."
Sounds like he'll be playing fullback after all.

#Griz adding FB Jamal Wilson is another indication of offensive changes. More 2-back, pro-style sets. It's what Delaney is comfortable with

Greg Rachac ‏@CatGrizInsider 18m
Co-OC Scott Gragg more comfortable with pro-style too, although he's grasped spread option well since joining staff in 2010

Will be strange to see QB Jordan Johnson under center. He's pretty much taken every snap out of shotgun since arriving to UM

I will say that I do not like the idea of pro-style with JJ under center. Does this mean that we will see a 6'8" QB part time and a 5'10" the rest of the time? Two offenses during the season? Sounds a lot like a certain QB shuffle played a few years ago. Waiting for the food throwing to start in 3, 2, 1...

Why does the inclusion of a "fullback" automatically mean a pro-style offense? This guy is the same size as Dan Moore, and we didn't use HIM as a fullback.

FWIW I was just making a smart comment in my last couple posts. Just wanted to see what happens in here!

I don't think a fullback transfer is the only reason people believe that UM will/is changing to a pro-style offense.

Do you honestly think they'd make THAT kind of change after running basically the same type of offense from last year during Spring ball? Isn't that a bit much to try to install in the three weeks leading up to the App State game?

Unless, of course, they're trying to guarantee a loss...

Right now nothing would surprise me.

Well the only thing you guys really KNOW for sure at this point, is that the current coaching staff has displayed some incredibly dumb judgement in terms of coaching decisions...

JJ doesn't have to be under center all the time in a pro-style offense. Boise state Runs some shotgun out of the pro-style. Harbaugh runs the pistol out of the pro-style with the 49ers and he used some shotgun formation at Stanford and San Diego.
The big deal is being able to execute all the pre snap motion and interchange. A lot of that pre snap stuff runs through the TE, FB and RB even if they don't wind up with the ball. If Montana can get the pre snap stuff right, defenses will be too busy thinking to just react.

One benefit of bringing in Wilson is being able to move Joey Counts over to tailback fulltime.

"Joey's role is going to be to run the football, big strong physical guy to replace Dan Moore," says Delaney.

That's good to hear, Joey is a helluva runner and should have the ball.

I smell something burning? Can you smell that? Smells like...... Bobcat fear. Yes that is definitely it. Much fear.

Where have some of you been? Coach MD said MONTHS AGO that the Griz will be implememting 2 back sets (21 and 22 personnel) in 2013. HENCE the need for a fullback (lead back battering ram to run power)...Jamal Wilson. Quit this linebacker nonsense. The coaches want Canada, Van and Counts (ect.) to run behind the bone-crushing blocks of Jamal Wilson. Wilson is a banger, craves contact.

Here's a little tidbit for ya; the Griz (prior to knowing Jordan Johnson would return) were going to play Gustafson (pocket passer) a lot in 2013, and hence the move to an under the center QB with a runningback and fullback in the backfield. Another reason for adding this scheme is the Griz want to improve their time of possession desparity to help out the defense.

They aren't going to abandon that scheme all-together just because Johnson returns. The Griz have have too good of an OL and too good of RBs not to pound it at some teams running power.

They will be MULTI-DIMENSIONAL on offense, using many formations/personnel groups and schemes (including shot-gun zone read). This will make them dynamic and harder to defend.

I'm personally pretty excited for the Griz O in 2013. They have have a great OL, have great speed and power at RB, and have increased their speed and athleticism at WR. And the most important thing, they have two QBs (that weren't avail in 2012) that I am very confident in this season; Jordan Johnson and Brady Gustafson.

The Griz swagger will return from it's 1 year layoff...mark it down.

Welcome to Griz Nation, Jamal. Prepare to win Championships.

If you are going to say this, you should be an NDSU fan............................

That's funny, but it hurts too, so it must be true.

(Griz will challenge this year and next however)
