new mslacat blog

Thanks for the mention.

Right after I put the site up a fine Egriz'er emailed me and let me know that I had a problem on Internet Explorer - my browser of choice is Firefox so I did not notice. I believe I got it fixed, but if anyone notices anything could you drop me an email or post something here, if the Admins do not mind.

I do have a favor to ask a couple people here if they do not mind. Could you try leaving a test comment one of the top couple topics. Just click on the "read more" thingy that will bring up the full article with a comment block at the bottom. From there type anything. and send. I believe I have it set so you do not need to leave an email, just some sort of a name / handle. The post will not immediately appear but I would appreciate it. Drop a little line here if you had problems. It would be greatly appreciated.

I have added the 2010 recruiting list to my site. let me know what you think. I hope to link individual names to article in the future. I would like to add a Lady Griz (and Bobcat women for that matter) but women's basketball info is so hard to come by it could be a short list.

amen to that. my first stop every day.

mslacat, i have a question for you about recruiting. two, actually.

first, it seems the cats have far more players on their radar screen at any one time than the griz. is this because your contacts are more extensive for montana state, or because their coaches simply cast a wider net? i notice, for example, that often the cats list players i believe they have little or no chance of getting, such as the point guard, dominique o'conner, from westchester high school. when the siginings are finally announced, they wind up with a 6'5" guard out of france that nobody has ever heard of, while the griz get will cherry, a guard that hadn't been mentioned but was truly an astounding get in my opinion.

which leads me to the second question, do different coaches have different recruiting philosophies? do huse and tinkle? and if you were a coach, how would you go about recruiting for either of the montana schools?

i'd ask this on your blog, but i have difficulty accessing it.

To the first question, I will answer yes and no. As a Bobcat fan/booster/general trouble maker I do get more information here and there on MSU recruits that I might not get from Griz recruits. Like "mslacat I saw this guy on campus today", but a lot of my information is more based on the word "Montana" and as such it comes in with out distinction of being U. of Montana or Montana State.

For example: Some one might email me as soon as he has heard a kid is looking at a "Montana" school just because the word Montana was mentioned. I have been told on numerous times that a kid is looking at one Montana school and it turns out to be the other. Half the time they can not remember whether I am a UM or MSU fan. Montana is also a great search term but it does not differentiate between "University" or "State". In short yes, I do get a few tips from MSU folks that I would not get from Griz folks, but generally it is almost impossible to look for info on one of the schools without getting info on the other.

One thing you should note I just went over to Rivals to check their databases on MSU BB and UM BB and what I found was that right now they have 5 players listed for UM and 9 for MSU, and that is pretty much my proportion of what I have.

To the second question: Yes there are differences in philosophies, but what exactly they are I am not sure I could define. I was talking to a former MSU coach about a player who did not sign with the Cats. I asked him if Tinkle was also tried to recruit him, and got the response, "No, he is not the type of player Tinkle would recruit". I could never get an answer as to what that meant. I can tell you this since Sprinkle left the program Huse has made another change in his recruiting. Sprinkle liked to recruit JC's a lot more than Huse. I really think you are going to see Huse back off JC's, and when he does look at JC’s he will look first kids with three years of eligibility.

I can not tell you about philosophies but I can relay a few observations.

Tinkle: Almost always when I hear of a Tinkle signing, or visit, it is almost guaranteed I will find lots of information on the player and he a fairly widely known and ranked player. Rarely do I find a “who is that” type of player. He is always listed in Rivals and Scout and when I ask someone about him they know him and can tell me a lot on him.

Huse: This is not true about all of Huse’s recruits but quite a few. Huse is known for pulling Rabbits out of his hat. Rush, Mbunga, and Brown are three examples. This year Marc-Antoine Bourgault was a kid who was in the US for only 3 weeks and Huse and staff saw him, liked him, and pursued him. Swita was the same way. He was hidden up the NW and injured. Huse saw him last summer when he was healthy, he liked him, and he went after him. Most colleges thought he had to play one more year at the JC level so they were not recruiting him. Huse convinced him to sign this year. I can also tell you this, Huse does not believe in recruiting services, he may look a kid up in one to get height and weight kind of things, but he only believes what he or his coaches see.

There are plusses and minus to both of these “observed differences”, but those are the biggest difference I see.

What problems are you having trying to leave a Comment?

PS don’t be surprised to see a version of this novel on my Blog

Did I scoop MSLACAT?

Not sure if this has been posted but...

Marcus Tibbs might end up a Griz
Decatur High School senior guard

There is still a chance that Tibbs could end up at a Division I school in the fall. The University of Montana has shown a lot of interest in Tibbs

According to Decatur head coach Kevin Olson, Montana can not offer Tibbs a scholarship because he is currently a non-qualifier due to his grades during his standard four-year high school career. Montana, or any other Division I school, can still petition the NCAA for Tibbs to become eligible. But they can’t do that until he completes the current semester at Dectatur, which won’t be completed until the middle of June when the Federal Way school district ends its school year.

“The NCAA will then make a ruling whether to accept this year’s transcript for eligibility,” Olson said. “So we will know this, most likely, in July.”

Even after signing his letter of intent to play at North Idaho, Tibbs could still be released from his scholarship to sign with a four-year school.

“If Montana has a scholarship available, they have said they would give it to Marcus,” Olson said. “However, most likely, they will not have a scholarship available in July.”

I have posted an update on CMR's Josh Huestis on my blog this morning. Josh is the prime target for both Huse and Tinkle next year. Josh could be a big time player for either Big Sky program on the offencive and defencive end.

More interesting recruiting news later today.

question for mslcat, or any other member of this board: can scholarships be taken away from basketball players? appears the griz are on to two players, and i'm just wondering, if we were to sign rasson young and then in june, tibbs became available as well, could tinkle pull two existing scholarships?

Scholarship are only guaranteed a year at a time. When you sign a LOI it guarantees you your first year scholarship. After that it must be renewed each following year. Coaches have to file with the NCAA a list of scholarship players by some time each year in Late June of each year. Once that is filed, those players on the list are locked into (as far as the NCAA is concerned) to the next years scholarship. A coach can notify a player before that date that his/her scholarship will be renewed, but does not have to. A coach can also give a scholarship after that date (if one is available), but I am not sure if it is guaranteed. I would guess so but not 100% on that.

If Huestis is the prime target he better grow or get some skills away from the basket. He moves pretty well and jumps but looked like a pure center to me at the State AA tourney. At 6'7" or so he has good height but not Division 1 center height. Never took a shot outside of 8 - 10 feet. He shot miserable FT's at one of the State games and got in foul trouble in a couple by trying to block shots....which he could do against undersized HS players. To his credit he appears a good team player with a good attitude, but I just don't see him being a guy that will do much in Division 1 basketball.

You might want to take another look.

Huestis will not play center in college, he will play primarily power forward and possibly some at small forward. His ability to play small forward will be tested this summer when he gets to play AAU ball at the small forward spot. At 6-7 he fine to play the power forward at the D-1 level, and I am told that he may be closer to 6-8 now. The true test though is he being recruited. He is and he hold offers. Some how I think the D-1 coaches are a better judge of talent than I.
