MBBALL New Mens Commit Brooklyn Hicks UNLV transfer

Good find 84! I love when you come over and dip into Basketball recruiting. 6’3 Sophomore Guard from Seattle played in all 33 games for the Rebels averaging 4ppg and 3rpg and played about 20 minutes per game. Shot 40% from the field but an abysmal 18% from three. That may just be a blip though as he shot 40% from 3 during his freshmen season, so it may have just been an off year for him. Also played in all 32 games for UNLV in his freshmen season. He’s an experienced guard that played a lot of games in the always tough Mountain West!

This kid definitely looks like he’ll contend for the starting PG spot. Just gotta iron out his 3 point shooting a bit but I like this pickup! This might be my favorite pickup so far!

I try to post where I see things, but my main focus is football for sure but maybe eventually I’ll get to other sports. Agree good pickup for sure.

I would guess if he played that many minutes a game as a freshman and sophomore that he is pretty solid defensive player..2023 Mr Basketball in state of Washington! Look at who recruited him. https://unlvrebels.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/brooklyn-hicks/16368

Love TD but I don't think you can develope a 3 shooter, either you are or you aren't.
I'm gonna just chalk it up to he had an off year from 3. That happens sometimes. Remember how good of a 3 shooter Josh Bannan was his freshmen year, and then in his sophomore year he just couldn't buy one? I seem to remember by his Junior he got back on track so this stuff does happen. He probably just needs to get some of his confidence back is all.

I don't disagree with fanofzoo. Coaching staffs can absolutely help incrementally improve percentages and consistency...but to think they can turn a non-shooter into a dead-eye at this point in their career is rare.

Taking a player who has shot the same way for 18-20 years, and then tearing down their shot to the studs and building it back up in less than a year is nearly impossible...and typically results in even worse percentages. At the point coaches inherit these players, most are 90% done with their playing careers.

If they haven't shown a propensity to shoot 90% of their career, I don't think chances are high that these guys will turn into snipers as juniors in college.

Brooklyn shot 40% from 3 on 20 attempts his freshman year. With more volume, typically percentages drop, which is what happened his sophomore year. This, along with his 53% ft percentage indicate to me that he's never going to be much of a threat behind the 3. Hopefully he can get in the gym, make 500 catch and shoot 3's in the summer every day, and keep defenses honest.

Shooting 33% on 3 attempts per game would show huge growth imo. Nevertheless, looks like he's got great length, size, and slashing abilities!

I hear you zoo and LB, but my faith is in Travis, Chris and Jay--if they offered a scholarship to Brooklyn and they did, there is a reason and that's good enough for me !!!

He was good the year prior. So much of it is quality of shot selection and ball movement. Whitney was historically not great from 3, but last year was very reliable. TD talks about it all the time. Ball movement, shot selection, give up a good shot for a great shot etc etc.

Last years team was elite at it.

It also probably didn't help that he played for Kevin Kruger and a very underachieving UNLV team. Get him around these guys and coaches and things might go differently.

That's like thinking a quarterback can't improve their completion percentage and then you look at what happened to Josh Allen from the time he was at Wyoming to his time in the NFL with Buffalo. If you were correct in your assumptions, Josh Allen wouldn't be a future HOF QB in the NFL.

I’d argue that Josh Allen is an outlier in improving accuracy between college and the nfl. Yeah that’s great he did, but that rarely happens. Hell, I can’t remember the last QB that improved accuracy between college and pro.

There was certainly a reason that this young man was getting 20 minutes per game, and it wasn't his shooting. He is probably a very tough defender and that is exactly what TD likes anyway. There are many ways a player can impact a game and shooting is just one of them.
I think his shooting can be straightened out though.

To me it's a head scratcher. It must be due to his mobility, quickness, passing and defensive skillset. Shooting is more natural and not taught.

My experience from the coaching perspective that shooting is always fixable, but it really comes down to aptitude from the player and their ability to develop the feel kinetically. However, the biggest hurdle is that so much of shooting success is emotional not physical.

To be honest, a lot guys because they are role players emotionally want to play themselves into bigger roles. They want to have immediate impact to stay on the floor. Shooters can't have a conscience. Similar to those in the pimp game, or so says Detective Terry Hoitz.

The shot has to be autonomic and reflexive. Too many players can't get out of their own heads. Good coaches eliminate hitches and glitches in the shot, but most importantly they get good shooters to get out of their own heads.

His shooting was good his Freshmen year at UNLV and all through high school. It really was only this past season that he kind of struggled. I tend to chalk that up to just an off year more than anything. I don't think there's anything wrong with his shot that's gonna hold him back in the future, I just think he had a tough year. That stuff happens sometimes.
