Hilarious all you who are so politically correct to demand a black player, only to refer to them in a now disparaging name...black.

Its African American ya dopes.

what's even more hilarious, in one sentence you say we're politically correct and we're not politically correct. have it your way, phoenix-american.

That was my point. If you are going to be politically correct, go all the way. I do like the phoenix-american part!

It wouldn't be a citay post if he wasn't trying to steal money from your wallet while giving you a big friendly hug....

if you were to conduct a street survey, by asking the first hundred african-americans you met to name the largest black republic in africa, then to indentify it on a map and to name its capital city, I doubt you'd find one person who could do that.

african-americans have contributed chapter and verse to american culture, from sport, to music, literature, science, dance, fashion, statesmanship, war heroics--everything--and have enriched immeasurably this white kid's life. I hope we can get to the point one day that we refer to them not as african-americans, but what they really are.

americans.

and i wish robin selvig would recruit more. we'd be better for it.

How is it working out for other Big Sky Conference teams?

thoreau said, the world is wider than our view of it. if your view is that the big sky conference is the end of all, then you're good to go. if you hate to see us get humiliated every time we go to the big dance, then come sit next to me.

citay, that is where your theory is flawed. You continually say that if Selvig recruited black athletes then they would be able to better compete in the big dance, but what you forget is that UM would not be recruiting such girls against UCLA, Oregon, or Colorado but against other BSC conference type schools. Just getting black athletes won't make UM better, but your ignorance is blind. Would I like to see Selvig expand his recruiting base...you bet, but for the best players he can get to Missoula...not just to recruit black athletes.

so, your theory is, selvig is already recruiting the best players he possibly can? my answer is, possibly not.

how can our men's coaches recruit the likes of cherry, jamar, dunn and oguine? (wait'll you see oguine. this kid is special.)

but selvig can't. I jes' don't get it, nuff said. i'm outta here on this subject.

citay, you can not help yourself...you want to make everything about race. And to touch on your question, it is easy...the men's team recruits California and the women's team doesn't and a big part of that is $$$. Are you telling me that Selvig is not recruiting the best players he possible can based on the resources he has available? Are you telling me that he is not recruiting the best players within his recruiting base? You make it sound like any black athlete in the Seattle/Portland area is better than what Selvig recruits...

you remind me of an american tourist in a foreign country, speaking over and over, louder and louder, when the problem is not hearing, just that the other guy speaks a different language.

How many different languages can you be racist in?

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. I'm just curious how you KNOW this to be the case.

That is quite an assumption and it is an assumption. Why don't you give us some facts? And your comment about handing out scholarships on a "willy nilly" basis - what a joke!!! It is almost as crazy as citay's quote "I think it's a point of great embarrassment for the school, and a reason selvig no longer gets much respect nationally."

It is my opinion that we don't want the best athletes. We want the best basketball players. There is a difference if you look around at various programs. Anybody who knows Coach Selvig knows he wants the best basketball players he can get and his record seems to prove it. If those players come from the local region than so be it. When your recruiting budget is low one has to recruit those players he can get and not ones which are pipe dreams in some fan's eyes that we have little or no chance of getting.

That fact is that we have had more than our share of players of the year in the conference and that is a pretty compelling fact that things are being done right.

Maybe not...but assuming that recruiting black athletes would mean that Selvig would be is an inaccurate statement. You also seem pretty confident in your belief...can you back it up?

For those of you saying that Selvig can't recruit out-of-region due to budgets (but the men can because of a larger budget), doesn't that conflict with NCAA and federal Title IX requirements that the programs be treated equally?

I can't imagine that the women have a smaller recruiting budget than the men - but I will admit that I am not an insider and can't speak with authority.

But, with authority I can say that if the women don't have the same recruiting budget as the men, let's raise hell and make sure that they get the money!!

Title 9 only gives female athletes an equal opportunity in athletics. Pretty similar in how businesses are to give minorities an equal opportunity for employment. In each case, how funds are allocated to manage the business, or who gets paid what is not and cannot be part of it.

Every school has the freedom to allocate funding and money as they feel necessary. The same as a business owner can chose how much to spend where. :thumb:
