New KPAX TV Announcers for Griz

I'm now curious how Scripps was able to land Trey Bender as the play-by-play announcer. Does he now live in Montana? He's called television games for Kansas, for Fox Sports Net Arizona, FSN Chicago, Arizona State baseball, games on ESPNU, ESPN3, NBC Universal. We seem to have hit the jackpot with getting Trey for Griz football games.
I was asking myself that question as well.

Same, this seems below his pay-grade but I will take it. Very excited to hear his call.
Absolutely below his pay grade. And it's significant because -- unlike basketball -- college football games are (nearly) all played on Saturday. So taking this gig necessarily limits his ability to do national games (I suppose he could still call 7:30 kicks on the west coast after calling a GRIZ home game, but even that is risky and would almost certainly require a private jet).

This makes me wonder (hope, pray!!!!) that there has been some discussion with him that UM will soon be in a major FBS conference, and that he'll have a major role in the broadcasts of those games.

Those dots seem a bit hard to connect. Maybe he just likes the atmosphere at Wa-Griz? Good crowds, great fans and a good team make announcing a lot easier!

I would tend to go with this explanation than some move up to FBS for sure. I don't believe that any team at the FBS level can move to a "major" FBS conference in any case, it just hasn't ever happened.
It took Central Florida (moved up in 1996), for example, a number of years to make their way into the Big 12. Boise (also 1996) is now in the PAC, but let's not pretend that is the same conference, they are making a lateral move out of the MWC. Even they had to go through the progression to get even as far as they are though.
I don't think you can read that much into this, but this is overall a nice upgrade. A far cry from the days when I had to stream games on the internet and the images on the monitor were blips that looked like an out of focus game of Donkey Kong.
But I was lucky to get that at Fort Stewart or Afghanistan!

He's very good and very experienced. And as an added bonus, he has some familiarity with the Griz and Wa-Griz as he's called two Griz playoff games. 2013 Coastal Carolina and 2019 SE Louisiana. Big upgrade!

Thanks for posting those. After watching part of the Southeastern Louisiana game again, I'm kind of gobsmacked that we will get to listen to somebody that good on a regular basis. The dude is just a consummate professional. Whoever brokered that deal deserves an attaboy and a raise.

You know what PBP guys like: Money and mass exposure. They'd call the action from Pete's outhouse if it paid well and drew huge ratings. I really doubt atmosphere weighed heavily into his decision.

Does it portend an fbs move? Likely not, but there's more to this than a great stadium to call games in, especially when you consider it's the only game he'll be able to call on any given weekend

We will never again reach the highs of "above the tits... of course I can say it on TV, it's a coaching point!"
That is a Golden Quote, from Marty. Whatever he was talking about, he was enthusiastic, and entertaining.
This person asking me the question said, if you didn't know better, you'd swear Marty was drunk to hear him speak. After two years in the booth, any of you who had never heard him before, as well as those who know him well, might equally concur with that assessment. Especially the "above the tits" call.
So what if he was drunk, or tippling. Back in the '70s, there was a local Montana radio DJ, the morning guy, Monday - Friday, who was entertaining as hell. He'd come up with some of the funniest shit ever heard on radio. Great way to start your day, with a laugh! I won't identify him, as he got canned for being drunk on the air. OOOH-GA-BOOGA, buddy. (Thats a heavy clue for those in my age category, and in the right town.)

Well, it’s certainly not the “cozy confines” of the s**thole that they call a press box at WA-Griz where he’ll be enjoying the game day atmosphere. I keep hearing that a new one is the next capital improvement project but there has been no such announcement yet. Badly needed.

True... and one of several badly needed upgrades...
