New kickoff rule?

If this becomes the rule, you would think we would see more onside kicks since risk/reward % would improve for kick off team.
Go Griz!
Hmmm.....seems to me the risk/reward percentage would remain the same. Enlighten me.

I guess the risk of not recovering an onside kick might mean you give your opponent the ball on their 45 yard line or so. If the new rule gives them the ball on the 25 yard line pretty much anyway, the risk of going for an onside kick is diminished a bit.

If you want risk and reward try this. If a fair catch is called for on a kick-off the ball moves to the 25. At that point the defensive captain rolls two die. If the total of the two die is six or less the offensive gets the ball at 26 to 31 depending on the number. If the number is 7 through 12 the ball gets moved back that many yards, potentially moving it back to the 13. In this scenario teams are potentially penalized more for being conservative chickenshits. Of course all this takes place after offensive and defensive captains play a game of chutes and ladders pregame to see who gets the ball first, eliminating the coin toss. Or, the whole rule change thing could just die a short but painful death and we could just let the players play the game.

Ya but why wouldn’t he if he’s gonna get it at the 25 every time. Why not just take kickoffs out of the game entirely. Unless your kicker can’t even make it to the 10 yard line, it really takes kickoffs out of the game.

I know many of you don't watch a lot of professional football, and many who do seem to have an intense dislike for the Patriots, but it seemed to me that Belichick took advantage of the current rule and had his kicker intentionally try to place the ball just around the goal line so the opposing team would have to return, betting that his special team covreage would keep them inside the 25 most of the time. Either that or Gostkowski can't kick it into the end zone any more which is possible but it looked like to me he could when he wanted to. I agree this type of rule would essentially eliminate returns unless teams were in a desperate situation needing a long return to get back into the game to make it worth the gamble.

You had me at intense dislike for the Patriots.

Except for the fact that you kick off from the 35, so the risk is giving your opponent the ball on your own 45, not theirs, and that remains the same. The Ivy league will be kicking off from their 40, there you get a little percentage movement.

Besides the on side kick option increasing, I would Suggest that the squib kick option would also increase as that takes the fair catch option and automatic 25 yard line starting position off the table along with limiting longer kick off returns. The chance of a mishandled kick off return also increases with these options vs just kicking off normally.

Why not just eliminate all kickoffs and punts. The team that starts at the beginning of either half or after a touchdown begins at the 10 yard line. The offense has four downs to get a first down. Teams can try a field goal from anywhere on the field with no run back if the ball doesn’t go through the back of the end zone. If no first down or field goal there is a turnover on downs and the other teams offense begins where the previous offense was stopped. This seems like it would improve safety and would undoubtedly increase scoring. Why not?

Not bad but rock, paper, scissors is quicker...2 out of 3
