I guess that was to show were CSU gets $$ for coach salary. Larger city population, larger student enrollment, larger metro area near by.

Exactly.

All true for sure. But the state of Colorado also has a lot of other interests to pull people's attention. They have 3 FBS school plus UNC, Bronco's, Nuggets, Rockies Baseball and there hockey.

I would think CSU is near the bottom of all of those other attractions (no offense to CSU). That being the case one would suggest the lessor pull of money.

Fort Collins metro alone is 3X Missoula in population. 70 miles away CSU has Denver as a fan base with close to 3 million people. I'm sure quite a few of them are CSU football fans that don't like baseball.

70 miles away Missoula has... Haugan, population 51 to draw from. A little extreme example for sure and used to illustrate the point that any town you find in the 70 mile radius to Missoula is going to be *far* closer in size to Haugan than it will be to Denver.

Take an average of 10 to 15K more students per year coming out of CSU and after 40 years you have half a million more alumns ( their alumn surplus over us the last 40 years is equal to half the population of the entire state of Montana) to solicit for donations and sell season tickets to.

Its the economy, and there is no way Missoula is ever going to compete against the big boys until it stops being Missoula and adds at least a quarter of a million more people. At which point Missoula stops being Missoula which most of us know and love, and becomes something different altogether. A place that I doubt many of us would still love.

Those are great things to bring up. I find it pretty funny that Paytonlives and other "move-uppers" think it would be so easy to compete with those in the MWC. I'll write it again. CSU with one of the lowest budgets in the conference, maybe THE lowest just dished out over a million per year for their coach. You pay yours $170, 000 per year? Paytonlives thinks regionalism would help out the travel costs. Not sure how much he follows college athletics, but there's a news flash: Regionalism is going out the door. Boise to the Big East? They also invited Air Force!

Bigskybears your joke of a Junior College/UNC is exactly the kind of joke of a program/school most of us will like to NOT BE ASSOCIATED with. If I were you I would refrain from posting in UM threads about moving up unless you just want to add more fire to the flames.

You're just a frat kid so it's a good thing I don't care what you think. What do you disagree with? The first part, that UM couldn't quit possibly compete with a bottom feeder like CSU (Who pays their coach millions) or that regionalism is dead in college sports?

UM attendance 24,878
CSU attendance 21,867 (close to that important Denver market)
UNC atterndance 3905 (close to that important Denver market)

All you're doing here is making a GREAT case for UNC never moving up.

Which translates to 37% of the city of Missoula showing up for a home game.
Or 23% of all of Missoula County showing up for a home game.
Or 2.5% of everyone in Montana showing up for a home.

That is freaking awesome! Running some #'s looking at stadium capacity vs. city metro population as a percentage, the only school among Oregon, Arizona, Washington, Utah, Colorado State, Boise State, USC, Nebraska, and Ohio State that beats us was Nebraska. Nebraska still has us @ 2x Lincoln metro vs. Missoula metro and ~2x state population. Next closest was the Univerity of Nike.

Stadium Capacity / Metro areas:
Lincoln 26.83%
Missoula 22.76%
Nike 16.77%
Fort Collins 11.53%
Norman, OK 6.21%
Boise 6.00%
Tucson 5.63%
Columbus 5.28%
Salt Lake 4.00%
Seattle 2.17%
USC 0.61%

This isn't intended to be a knock against Missoula or the state of Montana. Exact opposite in fact. The cool thing about Montana is the lack of population. One of the things that I miss about it. Point being, unless Missoula and the state of Montana doubles in population at a minimum AND we join a major conference where we're getting reciprocal gate receipts, OR convince Reebok or Converse to move to Missoula, we're fighting a losing battle.

As those #'s above show, there is VERY little room to grow given the current (lack of) population for Missoula and the state of Montana. There's nothing wrong with that. It is what it is.

Bluenoise interesting figures on % of attendance to state population for sure.
One would think however that if UM had better national exposure it would in turn draw more students into Missoula. Should that happen then the number of alumni increases. Also some of these young people coming from out of state to attend UM would stay in Montana after they graduate in turn adding to the state population. Slow increase certainly but likely.

Gee, what are the chances that Pflu was just hiring the best available candidates to fill the openings in his staff with no ulterior motives? Probably o, that would make too much sense!

Serious question. Do the majority of Montanans want that?

YES!!!!! Putting sports aside, of course we want the University to get bigger. Some of us want UM to be the best it can possibly be. Others want to do everything in their power to keep us a small irrelevant liberal arts school.

They already have a place like that. It is called Boulder.

A medical school would accomplish all that and have the added benefit of actually benefitting ALL Montana and the country as well....but hey....

Dude, priorities. Just think, in a few short years we could be playing Idaho at home for a chance at qualifying for the Humanitarian Bowl!

Screew the medical school, would love to see Idaho back on the schedule where they belong..UM's biggest rival, no matter how much lipstick you put on MSU...

Yeah. That irrelevant school that just got invited to the Pac 12... :? :? :? :? :?

When you're as far away from 3 million people as Bonner is from Frenchtown, those things happen.

How can you say CU is irrelevant? That's a very good school with a solid athletic background. I'm confused as to why would say that.

I wasn't saying CU is irrelevant. I was saying that the school everyone wants us to be already exists in Boulder, Colorado. No amount of wishing for us to become Boulder is going to make it happen until 3 million people move to Frenchtown. Boulder is a cool place and is basically what Missoula would be if Frenchtown had an NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL team. Along with all the other things that go along with having 3 million people living there.

Instead of wishing Missoula was Boulder, why not appreciate Missoula for what it is, a small market team playing right where it should be? Or move to Boulder if life is too embarassing to admit you're a fan of a school who plays football in a conference that that doesn't include USC?

The University of Montana is not playing "Right were it belongs". Maybe you are but there is always SUU or Northern Colorado. Heck maybe Carrol College needs more fans (they do great in their conference) you could run over there and root for them if you feel so comfortable aiming for low expectations via conference that is.

I would speculate that having UW and UM in your im a fan of on your sig means your happy with your one favorite team in a real conference, and happy with UM in the Big Joke Conference as you coud really care less about UMs affiliations.

Many of us dont see UM as being the university of Missoula but Montana, and there are more like 300,000 - 500,000 in montana who follow UM football. Thats a hell of alot more than just Missoula as your trying to advocate. Dont expect everyone to set the bar as low as you do for the University of Montana and hopes for our University to grow.
