New Coach by End of This Week?

According to what AD Marie Porter said on KPAX, she is moving quickly on hiring a new coach, and hopes to be able to announce the new hire by end of this week.

So, it does seem a little short of time for doing a national search I would think. Thus, it appears they must have a short list of candidates already made before Kennedy resigned.

It could be that everybody in the department already knew Kennedy was leaving for a period of time and may have already contacted many of the candidates a while ago. I Know they were talking to Krysko last week. I think they may have been working on this for possibly up to two weeks.

I wonder who else they may have talked to.

I agree, that really seems fast to hire someone this week (given Kennedy resigns on Monday, and first word leaked out late last week).

I hope that this doesn't affect any recruiting commitments, although the Missoulian article indicated no such risk.

For those who don't get the Missoulian, there was a short article that Bobby Knight called Heathcote to inquite about the job for his son. It does show that the job could generate national interest.

Also mentioned that Heathcote thought either Tinkle or Krysco would be a good choice. No mention of the Gonzaga candidate in this interview - not sure if the Missoulian didn't ask him or what, but it seemed strange since he is somewhat of a mentor to the Gonzaga program.

There was mention of Leon Rice in the Missoulian, but it seems UM didn't contact him at all, YET.

But the Missoulian also said that Leon Rice is happy at Gonzaga.

When you think about it. Tinkle got his degree in BB. After, playing for Montana he has gone on to have a career in BB. Is a BA on paper going to help him be a better coach? I think Tinkle is doing a good job advancing his career so far.

The problem with that, jagur (and I don't totally disagree with you), is that these coaches are responsible for their players not only as basketball players, but more importantly as people. Watching their players graduate should be a coach's most satisfying experience. In this day and age when college athletes do not routinely graduate, it should be important for coaches to possess a degree because their players look up to them. If your coach has proved success by attaining that job without the benefit of a degree, it doesn't say much in defense of staying in school, and these are institutions of higher learning, after all.

Bozone, I agree totally. Tinkle was in college in the mid-eighties and has been around the Missoula area off and on since. I would believe that given his position and apparent goals he would have had the initiative to complete his education. I believe it does not speak highly of him as a so called educator which is still what coaching is suppose to be about.

Bozone makes really good points, and the best example is legendary UCLA coach John Wooden. Coach Wooden had successful teams, but impact he had on the individual players was immeasurable.

All this aside, I like Wayne Tinkle. I do not believe he should be disqualified, if he has a good plan to get his degree (sounds like he does). AD Marie Porter needs to really question all of the candidates, and evaluate if each has a good plan for the UM basketball program/identified a coaching staff.

If you knew Tinkle You would know that you would be hard pressed to find a person of higher standards. He is stable, well respected coach.
He is the obvious choice for the job. Coaches like PK will always be here today, gone tommorrow. Unless, they are going to do a big search he is the man.
