New Basketball Tournament Format Announced

From the Big Sky Office today:

The men’s and women’s basketball championships will become seven-team tournaments, one more than the previous format. Both tournaments will be played March 14-16 at the site of the respective regular-season champion. The No. 1 seed will earn a bye to the semifinals on Friday. During the past decade, the men’s tournament had a Saturday, Tuesday-Wednesday format with the regular-season champion hosting the semifinals and championship.

During the regular-season, men’s and women’s basketball teams will continue to play each team in the league twice, bringing the total number of conference games from 16 to 20 for each squad. The top seven men’s and women’s team will qualify for the Big Sky Championship.

This will give UM fans a chance to attend the tourney in Ogden over a weekend. Should be capacity crowds Friday March 15 & Saturday March 16. Great changes. Having everybody play at one site is much better as well.

But what happens if say the mens and the womens team from the same school both win the conf? how does that work?

I doubt they are worried about Weber State women winning the conference this season.

Seriously, which school stands the most realistic chance of pulling that off this year? I pray it is never Portland State, or Sac State, unless they can make other arrangements for the tournament. I would say that about UNC too, but I actually enjoyed their tournament, minus the crappy officiating.

* In the event that the same school hosts both tournaments, one of the tournaments would open Wednesday with three quarterfinal games, and the other would stick to a Thursday start. Friday would then have four semifinal games with two championship games on Saturday.

Who said anything about Weber State?

Between him and Jerry Punch I'm not sure who has stepped on his dick more often in the basketball forum....

If the men's finals had by some strange happening wound up on ESPNU in either the Sacramento or Portland rec hall gym the Griz would have created NCAA seeding history by winding up as a 17th seed - if that were possible. We've got to shed this loser BSC albatross and its basement RPI mentality and move somewhere else - anywhere would be an improvement....maybe not the totally disrespected PAC -12 whose Oregon champ comes in at one spot above UM at a #12...

PS: However we'd gladly welcome Weber State to join the exodus...
