The only thing we as fans can do is to hold ourselves accountable for our behavior and support the team, the University of Montana, and each other.

If we are good to EVERYONE (those who love Griz football, and perhaps especially those who don't), and the team performs well; then perhaps Griz athletics can help bring the town of Missoula and the university together. Like I said-all we can do is keep it positive, recognize faults of the past-and learn from them, and keep supporting the team and university. Don't fall for the troll's traps and keep it civil, if not positive. Things have been tough around UM lately, but we can help change that through civil discussion and support.

I am Montana born (fifth generation) and raised and now live in the South much of the year. The resurgence of racism is frightening to most Carolinians, but I read more ugly racist comments on Egriz than I hear in SC. For those people "goin' Dixie' as they say here, I feel nothing but sadness. I hope the people who espouse such crap are not UM grads. I like to think we were taught to be above that, or, at minimum, keep words and actions to themselves.

On the actual shooting, what I was told, by someone involved with the defense side, is that the gun was the assault rifle of the gang member, who had a previous felony conviction for having illegal guns. The initial police report was that the guy was shot in the face, but the ballistic report showed that the bullet entered from under the chin off to the side a bit--an odd angle consistent with a struggle. There were all kinds of other wild rumors, but my sources said this is what occurred. Don't think there were any witnesses, and it was getting dark, other than perhaps Freeman, who apparently stayed in the car. The defense didn't call Freeman to testify. I assume the defense didn't want Freeman to presumably support Wilson. Assume the defense didn't want the prosecution asking all kinds of questions. This is from recollection, and indirect information.

I got to know Jimmy fairly well while he was in Missoula. Liked the guy from the time I met him as a frosh. Big smile on his face and friendly. We exchanged some letters while he was in jail. I provided information to Tim Hauck, who was coaching in LA at the time, so Tim could visit Jimmy in jail. I think Tim visited Jimmy several times. Had him over for dinner with one night after his senior season. My family really liked Jimmy. He was matter of fact about being in the LA jail for 2 years and not bitter. Could talk about it with some sense of humor. Said there was a big split between the Mexicans, who were the majority, and the Black guys. They would lift a lot, but in separate areas of the gym. Said the LA jail he was in had a big dormitory room for lots of guys and bunk beds. Very noisy at night. You had to wear shoes to bed at night, because fights would break during the night, and you would have to jump out of bed to be ready to defend. But there would often be a lot of glass on the floor. Thus, the shoes to protect your feet.

Or, the Missoula kid from the nice, respected family...can one predict that he will rape his best friend three years after he's recruited (and years after you've moved on to another job)? It's just stupid.

There is a very real issue to fight in regard to sexual assault education, bystander intervention, etc. The only thing that this misplaced and unfounded blame on Hauck does is cause people to dismiss the real problem.
