NDSU's President unhappy in Summit League

An email between the SUU President and the Summit League Commissioner indicated that NDSU is not pleased with the future direction of the Summit League. (Both NDSU and UND's Presidents seem to have been working in the background to undermine the Sioux nickname, too.) The time might be ripe for the Big Sky to add NDSU. The South Dakota schools are elated over hosting the Summit League basketball tournaments, so they'd never joined unless the Summit League dissolved.

I thought NDSU was in the Missouri Valley Conference....is that just for football?

If so, I assume they'd attempt to move all of their sports to the missouri valley, no?

They are in the Summit League for everything but football and wrestling.

The MVC and MVFC have different but overlapping memberships. The MVC plays a much higher lever of basketball. NDSU doesn't have the program or basketball facilities for the MVC.

kinda doubt they would leave Mo Valley for the Big Sky, no way the Mo Valley lets them leave...they are the rising star of that league

Most of the MVC schools don't have football and really don't care about it. None of the MVFC schools actually make any money with football, except NDSU. Basketball is the main profit center for all MVC schools. NDSU is not a basketball school, doesn't have the facilities for basketball, and likely gets a full MVC offer when hell freezes over.

Is this the same hack that keeps saying the Big Sky can't kick UND out if they keep the nickname ?
Legally, they can't. After the Fighting Sioux nickname was reinstated, the Big Sky didn't come out with a position until four months later: after the Big Sky Presidents met.

Even Fullerton and UND's President have written that UND would only be "dropped" if a whole lot of schools drop UND from their schedule and UND's athletic finances get really really bad. A total of 4 out of 350 DI schools refuse to schedule UND because of the nickname.

UND's President poisoned the well with the Summit League (as the Summit League's Commissioner himself has stated that UND pressured him to come out against the nickname.) Fullerton will do what Big Sky Presidents say: oppose the nickname. Portland State's President and UND's President go way back as buddies in the University of Illinois system. Both were ecstatic to kill the Chief Illiniwek there. Now in the Big Sky, they are doing their dirty backroom deeds together again.

Fullerton has said in several interviews that there is nothing to say that UND can't be moved out of the conference. Fullerton also said, "For those people that think that once they're in, they're in: any institution in the Big Sky can be voted out at any time, so that is not necessarily a curtain they can hide behind. We sit now at 13 schools, and I'll be honest with you 12 is a much better number... If I was the 13th school and I lived 600 miles away, I wouldn't be very confident that this is a relationship that can be cemented forever."

The original poster here is so far off base it's laughable. Not only doesn't he have a clue about the BSC he's even more clueless about the Summit league or the MVFC and the MVC. Long and short is for you BSC fans glad you got UND. Enjoy!

All of that crap Fullerton is spouting is to scare and intimidate the voters of North Dakota into voting down the nickname. Everything that Fullerton says is only by the permission of UND's President, who needs to kill the nickname, otherwise his job becomes in jeopardy by all the crap he has pulled.

The Big Sky would not be talking about going 12 being the perfect number (by adding Idaho) unless UND was in the mix.

So the Big Sky is going to kick out UND for a nickname is such a joke and the President know it. Practically every Big Sky school has been on much more serious probation for cheating, academics, or actual crimes - those are the problems. Big Sky Presidents know APR, athlete behavior are much more important than an Indian nickname (that the Sioux support BTW). To kick out UND, with its stellar APR, when an Idaho State, Sac St, or NAU have been walking APR disasters would reveal the Big Sky as total academic hypocrites. The Presidents have to support UND's President to get rid of the name, as all the President's protect each other.

Would have thought eGriz would have banned this type Bison poster long ago. Probably lakesbison or JBB.

Here's an email exchange between the South Utah President and a Utah Ute fan that was sent to me. Southern Utah is not opposing the nickname. The official Big Sky line - that both Fullerton and UND's President repeat - is that eventually the number of schools that won't schedule UND because of the name will increase. (It's been at 4 for almost a decade, so it would take like until the year 2500 for UND to be affected by half the NCAA not willing to schedule it. When the hippie generation that is currently presidential age dies out, society will again embrace thoughtful Indian nicknames like Fighting Sioux.)

Re: Your alleged oppostion to the Fighting Sioux Nickname of Univ. of North Dakota

FROM:Michael Benson Wednesday, May 30, 2012 9:47 PM

Thanks for your note. As you can imagine, I have received several messages from people inquiring as to what SUU's position is with regard to the issues in North Dakota.

Southern Utah University has never taken a public, nor private stance against the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname. Our position has always been to support whatever agreement UND and the NCAA finally come to regarding the use of the Fighting Sioux nickname.

If UND is unable to meet the mandates and continues the use of the Fighting Sioux nickname, the consequential penalties and sanctions the NCAA will impose on UND would become a great detriment to the Big Sky Conference institutions; however, only then would our institution entertain the option of not scheduling UND.

Again, we have never come out against UND's Fighting Sioux nickname and wish them well in their efforts to rectify the current situation with the NCAA.

I hope this is helpful.

Kind regards,

Mike

President Benson,

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is _________. I am Alumni of The Univeristy of Utah who's nickname is The Utes. As I'm sure you are aware this nickname has been in continuous use with the Ute Tribe's blessing and consent. The University of Utah has a symbiotic relationship with the Ute Tribe.

The reason I am contacting you is it's been alleged that you are part of an effort to convince the University of North Dakota to change their name from the Fighting Sioux. This concerns me for the following reasons:
1. I'm not sure it is our place to tell the University of North Dakota what they can use for a nickname.
2. It appears that The Sioux Tribe is generally in support of it's use.
3. The State of North Dakota is having a statewide vote on this issue, it seems to me we should be letting North Dakota make this decision since it has no impact on SUU.
4. In the past it has been the "politically correct" thing to do in going after these nicknames.
5. Is the Utes name next on the list?

In summary I am of the opinion that unless the nickname is a clearly offensive emblem, symbol etc such as the Cleveland Indians caricature or the Washington Redskins then these issues ought to be decided on a local level and absent undue influence from other members of an athletic conference. I hope that you will consider the issues/points I've raised here.

Regards

Class of 1987 and proud University of Utah Ute.

What's in a name? How about Fighting Wimps? Wind blowers? Flat chested horses? Big boppers? Lost Dakota? Epact Dakota? War envy? Flying bird? Mastodons? Fighting Sheep? Iceberg tips? Loose Tongue?

See how great all these names are and politically correct also. Makes me want to hug all of you!

So you're saying that Fullerton lied, and teams legally can't be kicked out of the Big Sky? If you are correct, that would be a pretty stupid threat if it's a lie. If you're not saying that he's lying, then you lied by saying the Big Sky can't legally kick UND out of the Big Sky. So are you claiming that Fullerton is lying, or are you admitting that you are?
