I agree "The King is not dead". Though at the moment his condition isn't exactly clear.

No Dakota St & Montana both made their own mistakes and each has some obvious issues to clean up. That said, overall each team played a great game. Kudos for displaying FCS so well to the entire nation!

NDSU's offensive line is a beast and their running game (sans Crockett) is still a force of nature. Wentz getting hobbled late in the game was a huge advantage for the Griz to take that element out of it. The dude is a very smooth runner and made me nervous every time he rolled out. Although the Bison gained about 10,000 yards I felt the Montana defensive line put in an impressive effort considering the huge size difference. Our inexperience secondary also pleasantly surprised me (except for a couple of blown coverages) playing as well as they did.

I'd also like to commend those of you at the game. You were loud and proud and that came through the TV speakers. To any NDSU fans reading this, hope we can schedule another series again, and best of luck to you in the coming season! :ugeek:

Hope to schedule this game again as well. Fun series for sure. I thought Gus for Montana was pretty salty. Should be a good one all year for the Griz. Couple of thoughts I have to close this game.

1. Your two wide receivers are tremendous football players. Those who bashed NDSU's secondary didn't watch the same game I did. Nearly every pass play was defended well. The Griz receivers were frankly just more athletic and came down with the ball.
2. With point 1 being said, not having CJ Smith healthy for this game completely changed the outcome. The Griz targeted one DB, Jordan Champion, the entire game. Smith is an extremely talented

Point 2...? Excuses again.....maybe our "extremely talented" linebabacker did not not play either. We here play as a team, win as a team and will lose as a team...if one player puts the mighty buffs at such disadvantage you are in dire shape.

Not trying to call it an excuse for losing. NDSU is the ultimate team orientated football team, but when you have by far your most talented defensive player out, who happens to be a cornerback, going up against that kind of offense and those talented of wide receivers, it is going to change the outcome of the game. Again no excuses here on my part. Just stating my viewpoints from the game and it was clear how big of an impact it was. NDSU has always had the next man up motto. Unfortunately, this year that motto might not translate well into wins.

Yes, you are correct about the dire outcome this year if Smith can't get healthy. NDSU's secondary is extremely inexperienced. Smith changes that entire secondary with his coverage skills. NDSU is screwed without him.

Carson couldn't run. That took their extra X factor out on their final drive. Probably should have ran it one more play.
Conversely, your D was damn lucky to get it to 4 th down. At 15 tics left, NDSU was not set and had blown WR coverage (2vs1db) db was jumping around for help. That's when Brady spiked the ball to stop the clock.
Bottom line NDSU is still a heck of a team. That was a game for the ages.
i tend to agree with other posters. I think the Bison secondary is suspect. Over 400 yards passing, with a new starting QB. Think the Bison only gave up like 200 ypg last year.
Ahhh..the beautiful mojo that Wa-Griz has on teams.

I saw that as well when Gustafson spiked it. I just shut my eyes when I saw that developing. Sat with about a dozen Griz fans, and I think I am the only one who noticed.

Hope you were treated well 2011. IMO, that's still one hell of a scary team you have. With your ball hawking TOP skills, you guys aren't sliding anywhere, anytime soon. Just continuing on, as I see it.
Best of luck on your season.

Smith is indeed a high quality player and given the talent still on board, NDSU will dominate FCS this fall. I hope the bison do win out! NDSU sets the standard now and one loss at this juncture changes nothing. Maybe meet again in December in WaGriz when the white stuff dusting us is snow and not ash! We have a good win but a long season awaites us in montana land.

NDSU looks to have some real problems in the secondary this year and some questionable O play calling there. Great win by griz though

Key IMO was wentz getting banged up. He was doing damage and really took that aspect of the game out of the offense for them.

And you LOST!!!!!!!!!!

To a team you kept saying you'd beat by 30!!!!

You're right. The King is alive and well. And He lives in Missoula Montana!!!!!!!

Uuuhhhhhhhh....I'm a Griz fan. Just pointing out why I thought there was questionable play calling at the end. And if you look at my prediction I said 27-20 ndsu.

Sorry Doc. That was a misquote by me. Meant to quote bisonation there.

Oh I figured...just making sure we were clear on who the douche was on this board! Glad that dude is off :jack: or whatever.

ndsu had about 10 min more TOP...........that is not the game plan stitt's wanted on offense or ty wanted on defense. so ndsu did what they do best.....controlled the TOP in this game. can't say that they were out of their game plan that much when this is their claim to fame.....the rest is they played a team that was a match for them on all levels, now it is history.......gotta live with that

Who cares about TOP? We ran (a lot) more plays than them, that's all that matters.

The D may care, somewhat, for the TOP ... but the only number that really counts (38-35 good guys) took care of that. :)

Again though, plays is more important than TOP. Obviously their physical run game that shuffles RBs in and out is tough to play against but going hurry up and running a ton of plays seemed to pay off more with our offense leading 2 long scoring drives to end the game while the Bison faltered late in the game.

TOP don't mean shit. It's all about the number of plays you have to defense.

you missed the point i was making to bison nation about his take on the bison not getting all the brakes so they lost the game. my point was they won the TOP which is one of their assets to winning so this was to prove that they were not completely out of their game, however, the takeaway was that they played a a team that was a match for them on all levels so deal with it. get it?

The bolded is still inaccurate since Stitt is repeatedly quoted as mentioning the number of plays run to evaluate as his benchmark. Anyways I'm not sure how you expect me to know your post was about bisonation since you didn't quote him and nowhere in his posts does he mention "being out of gameplan" or "TOP" but sorry if I misunderstood your intention.

NDSU was 0-1 back in 2009 I believe last time at Iowa State
0-1 back in 2008 vs Wyoming

Playcalling on ndsu's last drive was embarrassing wow I just rewatched it.

Other than the holding call deep in the Griz Red Zone that prevented NDSU from going up by 14 in the second half and the fumble by the QB on the fly sweep exchange, I agree with you that the last NDSU possession was bad and probably cost them the game. Run the ball on 2nd and seven at the 2:00 mark. That roll-out type pass on 2nd and 7 was a mystery.....Run the ball and get a 3rd and 2. If you don't get it on 3rd down, you probably killed enough of the clock to win it.....

I agree. Couldn't believe they were throwing.

Playing freshmen is not an excuse for the Bison defeat. The Gris played one, or more freshmen on every defensive play. We learned a lot of new numbers on our team. The Bison just got beat by a better team.

I was in the NEZ (as an NDSU fan) and when the Bison passed on 2nd and seven I said to the Griz fan next to me "what the hell was that?" On the second pass I said "They are going to give this on away." the Griz guy just said "Thanks". Fun game and outstanding stadium and fan experience. Always fun in Missoula! Maybe a match up in December.

Carson had a bad game, 2 missed td passes to wide open guys, 2 fumbles and a 3 & out with 2:25 left, that just isn't NDSU football.

NDSU only had 4 returners on defense with CJ out, when he comes back our DB's change . ALOT.

we screwed up a 4th & 10 with 30 sec's left as well.

we ended with a true freshman safety.

all of that, and we only lost with 3 sec's left.

the KING is not dead...trust me.
Excuses (Montana had as many mess-ups and was without their All-American candidate LB) aside, of course, this in no way this deters a quest for #5. In my mind the NC will still go through Fargo. But you're suggesting the Montana defense had nothing to do with Wentz's failures to execute, which is BS. You also don't mention that the Griz O (led by a kid who had never played a meaningful down) had the NDSU D worn down on the last drive, beating you at your own game. NDSU was supposed to be the fourth quarter team.

We'll take a well-deserved win and not wish for a rematch in the playoffs....

posting this in multiple threads, because I want all the Griz fans to see it and realize how much damn fun my group had.

I also would like to say "Thank You" to all the Griz fans, this was the most fun I have ever had at an away tailgate/game...and we lost! I especially want to thank reinell30 for inviting us to his tailgate, what a bunch of good dudes. We were in Missoula for 2.5 days and we met 1 a-hole, 1! It was a fantastic weekend and I wish we could do it all over again next weekend. Thanks for a memorable weekend Griz!
