No opponent in NDSU’s 22-year Division I era has had a larger time of possession than Illinois State’s 42 minutes, 1 second. It led to the Redbirds also having large advantages in yards (422 to 179) and first downs (23 to 6) and not being undone by Rittenhouse throwing five interceptions, including a pick-6.

Scoring on the first couple plays of the game and then a punt return definitely can skew the numbers. I agree, how NDSU was up by 14 amazed me.

If you had told me prior to the game ndsu would pick off five passes, and that with that information I could bet any amount on the bison straight up to win, my 401(k) would have .19 left in it.
It’s a really odd stat line for a winning team. The only similar one this year was Michigan at Northwestern and that was such an anomaly that it simply hadn’t happened historically. This game had one more turnover than the 4 in that game. Combined with the unranked team beating the #16 seed to then play and beat the #1 seed. In certain context has to be at the top of all time upsets.

If you haven't done so already, treat yourself to a power-gloat and watch the last 5 minutes of Illinois State vc NDSU game. Death by short successful Rittenhouse passes interspersed with long faced Bison afficionados in the crowd was a satisfaction years in the making.

Similar kinda of thing happened with Griz vs EWU. Griz offense took very little time off the clock. Let team hang around and your defense gets tired and then you are in trouble.

Better yet, 3 minutes.

Proves how QB centric they were this year. When he got hurt the whole season changed for them.

FTB
If you're referring to NDSU's QB, he was hurt on the last offensive play when he was stripped-fumbled on the 23 yd line. He had like 3 completions and one was a 73 yd touchdown on the first play and about 120 for the whole game. TOP was 42-18 or so, NDSU got taken to the outhouse, 5 interceptions kept it that close.

Different injury, Payton broke his finger on the fumble play thats why he didn't return.

They also had two possessions that ended in turnover on downs so essentially 7 turnovers.
