NDSU Bison scouting report

Based on last season, as well as our 3 scrimmages this season, have we ever seen more pathetic special teams play from a Griz football team? Talk about going from having the best Special Teams in the nation during Hauck's regime, to what we have now, it is a 180 degree turn. Most fans do not appreciate the value of having solid special teams. All I hear about is our defense and our offense. But nobody mentions our special teams. Against a great team like NDSU, our special team play could cost us dearly. We can not afford blocked punts and FGs, poor punt and KO coverage, or poor tackling. In summary, special team play is equally as important as offense and defense, and if ours is as bad as it was last season, or in the scrimmages this fall, it will not be pretty on Saturday.

Mr. BW: thank you for the scouting report, minus the usual snarky comments. Well done. Smoke and haze keep getting mentioned. Is it really that bad ? I have asthma ......

Thanks? But what snarky comments?

"Minus" meaning there weren't any...... I could/should have chosen a different word. Sorry

Gotcha - ok, I try to remove the Griz fan bias from these as much as possible

Great write up, if we are going to come out in the lead it is going to be off of big plays. 3-4 long passes for touchdowns or a pick 6 to help would be great. I think we'll need 30 or more to win. That being said, if I was betting my money I'd put it on NDSU. They are the champs until we see otherwise. Would love a win and it would be great to have a win show up in a game like this one. I'm interested to see where this team ends up on Saturday and at the end of the year.

I would agree - whichever team gets over 30 probably wins the game. I would certainly think it'll be easier for NDSU to accomplish that than the Griz. Kicking concerns remain and the Griz presumably are going to try to convert quite a few 4th and shorts, which could result in some missed points (although one could argue it's probably better to attempt to get the 4th than miss a fieldgoal).

I'll reserve my judgement on this until it costs us in a game this year. However, if it turns out like it has looked so far, it will be bad.

I'll add on to the big play part.

I think we need big plays from multiple guys. We want to spread their secondary thin trying to keep our receivers in front of them. Ben Roberts and hopefully someone else (Curran/Lucas/Justin Calhoun) will need to keep them from stacking up on Jamaal and Hendu.

Solid point, I'd say that obviously our best big play potential guy is Hendu - he had big plays in each scrimmage, he had big plays when depressed and sick as a dog last year at NDSU, and he's always been a playmaker when healthy. Jones I think some Griz fans are casting aside but this guy is the complete WR - he's our legit #1 WR. Roberts I like a lot to win some jump-ball battles, I'm on his bandwagon big time after seeing how quickly he progressed through fall camp. Watch for some surprise guys too, Burke, Carlson, or Janssen.

Question to those "in the know".
Since school started up did the team continue to practice each day, or did they have time off?

PS. Nice write up BW. Good job as always.

Biggest keys to this game for me are the O-line and the nerves of a first time starting QB against the #1 team in the country.....oh and a national tv audience. If the O-line plays well and Brady keeps the nerves in check, it could be a really good day to be a Griz fan.

The player that has impressed me the most for the Bisons is their two year starter Wentz. At 6'6' 235lbs he throws very well, but he can run. I don't think we can stop him, but things can be difficult for the Bisons, if we can. If we can keep it close the Griz have a chance, but Wentz is a great fourth quarter player. There will be plenty of turnovers, so anything can happen.

People said we wouldn't be able to stop Armanti Edwards and App State's offense in 2009 too...

Well the did stack up about 500 yards on us that day with Edwards accounting for about 400 of those...

And you were a way, way better team back then.

I was reflecting on that game and how many players in that game would eventually get a shot with the NFL. It was a staggering amount for an FCS matchup. Both teams were way better back then.
