This is some of the crazy stuff facing or coming from the NCAA winter conference in January:

The NCAA approved a proposal that will allow men’s basketball players who dream of playing in the NBA “to attempt to make those dreams a reality without taking away their ability to come back and play in amateur collegiate sport if they happen to be unsuccessful.” Those sentiments were echoed by Kansas Men’s Basketball Coach Bill Self, who stated that the legislation “will allow student-athletes the opportunity to make informed decisions on their true status as a draft prospect before forfeiting their collegiate eligibility.”

Another rule was adopted that will affect prospective student-athletes who are considering whether to pursue a collegiate baseball career or sign with a major league baseball team. The proposed rule permits high-school athletes who are selected in the MLB draft to retain an agent or attorney for the limited purpose of obtaining advice and counsel during contract negotiations with an MLB organization.

One of the biggest issues was left to be tackled later. Prior to the start of the NCAA Convention, the Pac-12 agreed to withdraw its proposal that would have permitted college athletes to use their names, images, and likenesses to promote non-athletic business ventures. As a result, this issue will continue to be handled via the NCAA’s waiver process on a case-by-case basis.
