NAU vs Montana Predictions

If the ofense makes the same mistakes it made against' App St., I believe we will be in for a long afternoon. However, if we take care of the ball it will be a very good game. This is going to be the first Big Sky test for many of our young players. In this game, they will learn of the target they all carry on their backs for being Griz and that every Big Sky teams goal is to beat the Griz, especially at home.
This happens I predict:
Griz 38
NAU 17

I could change my pick...I keep dreaming of Peter Nguyen catching a kickoff and the momentum takes him out of bounds. Montana is called for a safety, thus turning momentum to NAU before the half. Crazy dream I know and I am sure it could never come true.......wait

Oh, and Grizo - you should have said the Griz are going to get their kilts hiked up and their backsides tenderized like a fat hot in a SmithFields foods lot. ;)

This will be an interesting matchup and a great way to open up the conference season. Strength against strength with the NAU run oriented offense going against the UM run defense. I think these will neutralize each other and the game will come down to NAU's run defense against UM's run offense and how both of the passing games can perform. I actually do not think UM's passing game is that far away from having a huge breakout. Would love to see that this weekend. I did not think that the Griz pass defense was all that bad against Liberty even though they did give up over 300 yards passing. About half of that was on 4 plays, but there is definitely room for improvement. If the pass coverage is as good or better than it was last week the Griz will win this game by two scores. I am not sure that NAU has really been tested yet. One blowout loss, one blowout win and a close win against a less than impressive FBS foe.

Prediction is 41-24 Griz.

A fair and well thought out game prognosis. The deck is stacked against NAU based on their history of falling flat on their faces in Missoula and the fact that their top two quarterbacks are suffering various (unannounced as of yet from what I've read) levels of injury. A gut feeling is Grossart will start with NAU's third string qb as backup. From the replays on tv from last weekend, I doubt Cartright will be back anytime soon. Who knows as NAU is tight-lipped on injury info getting out. I disagree with your thought that NAU hasn't been tested yet. Their first two games were road games vs. ASU and UNLV. That isn't an easy start to the season for an FCS team.

The defense is playing well, as well as special teams. We should over come an excited nau team...

Griz 31
nau 24

Go Griz!! :thumb:

I was gonna' say something like that in my initial prediction, Putter, but with more colorful verbiage...if you catch my drift!??!

I thought I'd keep it simple, and play it safe like I have for the past 10 years...and I still got called an idiot!

I can't wait for the Griz vs Eastern Washington Prediction thread!! ;)

From the Missoulian, Fritz Neighbor:

Top Axer could’ve been a Griz

The Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, Montana’s homecoming foe at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, boasts 15 starters back from a team that went 4-7 a year ago.

That’s not a gaudy record but those Lumberjacks lost some tight games – including a 28-24 setback to the Montana Grizzlies – and UM coach Mick Delaney figures his team better be ready for its Big Sky Conference opener, at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.

That may go double for a guy who could have ended up a Griz: Lumberjack running back Zach Bauman.

“We recruited Zach right up until the very end,” Delaney said Tuesday, after Montana wrapped up its weekly news conference. “And you know, we probably waited around a bit too long and he committed to Northern Arizona in early January.

“Shalon (Baker, UM’s receivers coach) was recruiting him and was jumping up and down on the table for him. I liked him a lot. For whatever reason, at that point in time … we probably fooled around a little too long before we made a strong move.”

It’s worth noting that it was 2010, and Robin Pflugrad and his staff – Delaney was the lone holdover – was in full scramble mode following the departure of head coach Bobby Hauck for UNLV. Pflugrad had been hired on New Year’s Eve, with signing day roughly five weeks away.

Bauman didn’t mention Montana at the Big Sky Football Kickoff in Park City, Utah, where he was NAU’s player representative. But he has seemed to play with a chip on his shoulder against the Griz, with 127 rushing yards against them in 2010 and 148 more last year.

“We’re not going to shut him down,” Delaney warned Tuesday. “Nobody’s going to shut him all the way down. But we’ve got to keep him contained and not give up the great big plays.”

Bauman, 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds, already ranks fourth in NAU history for career rushing yards with 2,740. He was nicked up in NAU’s opening 63-6 loss at Arizona State but still has 246 rushing yards and is averaging 7.5 yards a carry.

Bauman’s 75-yard scoring run to open the Jacks’ 69-0 win over Division II Fort Lewis last week is the longest in the Big Sky Conference in 2012.

“He’s a strong kid with excellent speed,” Delaney said. “If I’m not mistaken he was a 10.6, 10.7-second 100-meter guy in high school. And he’s at full speed in about a step.”

So obviously NAU is talented, they've got a RB that UM wanted...

Defense returns 8 interceptions for td's, Lider misses an extra point. Defense also gives up 7 td's on screen passes by playing 75 yds off of the rec's....On offense, Dan Moore has two 75 yd runs, the rest are 3 and outs.

This!

Not much data to analyze for 2012 yet, so let's break out the crystal ball. First game ASU destroyed NAU 63 - 6 although TOP was nearly identical?!?! Last game NAU beat Ft. Lewis 69 zip. So that would put their offensive power somewhere around 35pts per game. ;) Playing against the Griz knocks 25% off of that, so now you're at 26 pts. Then playing the Griz at home cuts that number in half to around two TD's or 14pts. Add a field goal since it's a homecoming crowd :? (wine & cheese) and your up to a grand total of 17pts for NAU.

NAU gets 10 in the first half relatively easily, and a freak TD early in the 3rd Qtr. Griz start slow but get two TD's and a FG in the first half, then pour it on middle of the 3Qtr with a TD and another FG. Beginning of 4th Griz get a turnover and capitalize.

Griz 34
NAU 17 (generous)
