NAU v. Montana Game Thread

And that is ball game. 73-65 NAU

Congrats to NAU.

Rebounding and TO's and cold shooting in the second half really killed the Griz tonight.

No, what killed the Griz is that they are so piss poor at the 4 and 5 positions. The Griz are so poor defensively and offensively in the middle, that winning games is going to be a battle every night.

I think the light at the end of the tunnel that I saw after the Idaho game is a train wreck in the making. If we can't rebound and play some defense we are a middle of the conference team. Shooting will only carry you when you are hot. We have a few guys like Kareem, Gregory, Deshields and Dunn with big hearts and no quit but that will not offset an inside game and rebounding in most circumstances. Just look at the points in the paint for NAU and their 2nd half shooting percentage and it will sum up the game.

Shoot. They can't do it.

NAU played to win; UM didn't. Dixon had a great game. Congrats to NAU.

That is B.S.
Part of the game, they put on great pressure. Then, they would just stand around under the basket as NAU came in. Over and over. And Dixon had a great night. UM couldn't shut him down.

UMGriz75, you are correct...the Griz have no heart, at least not one large enough to fill the void at the 4 and 5 positions. You are a dope, they fought all the way to the end...they are just out manned when it comes to bigs, and when the shots are not dropping, they will have games like this.

What didn't happen tonight was what the Griz have been able to do in the past: Gregory, Jamar, DeShields make it personal and start pushing their individual performances: breaking through and getting to the basket. There was very little of that tonight in the second half, and it wasn't because of NAU defense; none of the starters that have made that work in the past -- heart stopping, but it worked -- were consistently doing that tonight like they have been able to do in the past. The plays to do that weren't even initiated.

Too, Hutch and Andy were played during the first half; and not much during the second. We lost in the second half.

No sugar coating it--the Griz were just flat our pathetically embarrassing the second half. And as other posters hinted, we have no inside game and NAU was a master at exposing that after halftime. (This has gotten increasingly more apparent with each game). Live by the 3, die by the 3--you can't expect your perimeter game to carry you far long-term. And you must play "D" for 90 feet---not just 45 or 70. NAU did a supreme job of playing the half-court game when Hutch & Martin were on the pine---where was our "bigs" D?

Not crying doomsday, but we have some serious flaws to fix---let alone reduce. Cmon Tinks & Co--get 'em focused and ready.

so now you are not only saying that the Griz have no heart, but that Tinkle did a poor job coaching....

Oh my gosh. Wow. I think we lost the game. There are reasons why. It didn't just "happen."

This is one disappointing game. A lot of missed FT's and open 3's we normally hit. A lot of uncharacteristic turnovers and few forced shots (from our Freshman Gfeller and Dunn). Terrible post defense. NAU hitting everything it seems.

Wayne has a tough decision to make. Either commit to balls to wall pressure defense, and uptempo offense, or commit to developing our options inside?

The positives, we know what we have in Deshields, Gregory, and Jamar. Beyond that, there is very little consistency in performance. I can give Dunn and Gfeller a pass. That is to be expected of Freshmen. Those 2 will only get better. I am not too worried about those 2. I am really concerned about inconsistent play from Weisner, Hutchison, Martin, and Kemp. Weisner is an upper classman now, and has plenty of experience behind him. There is no excuse for inconsistent play from him. Hutchison is a SR. Absolutely no excuse for not getting more from him on the boards and defense. Martin is still developing. It takes longer to build a big man than it does a perimeter player. I cannot be too hard on Andy. Growing pains are part of the process for a young big man. I have yet to hear any reason, why Kemp is not on the court more? Either way, have to say he is the biggest disappointment of this season so far. Athletically and physically, Kemp has a very high ceiling.

We know Gfeller, Dunn, and Bradshaw will all get better with experience. This comes down on how to get better play to make up for lack of a post game? If this were my decision, from what I have seen, I'd commit 20 plus minutes per game each to Martin and Kemp. Kemp has a lot of offensive and rebounding potential. Andy has a soft touch and always a presence on defense. I hate to be hard on a player, but it looks like the GRIZ cannot get much more out of Hutchison for whatever reasons. Offensively, unless more talent develops scoring inside, I would post up Kareem all day on off guards and small forwards. There is not a perimeter player in the conference who can guard him one on one inside.

Regardless of who gets minutes in the paint or personnel, I would do a lot more pressure defense and trapping to fully utilize our 1,2,3 depth. Defense has to create easier baskets for the team. Even an extra 2 to 3 baskets per game would be beneficial. I hope to see more commitment to Kemp and Martin moving forward this season.

If this team does not come out fired up against Sac State, it will be time to worry some. I am not quite there yet.

Yup...
This team in it's current state is dead in the water.....
