I get a kick out the “this is our first real test” cliché on e-griz. You guys say that every week. ASU, UND were supposed to be “real tests”, and after we pounded them, they were weak in hindsight.

After the Griz beat NAU, then PSU will be the “first real test” and so on and so on.

Been really busy, wanted to reply to this earlier. My post in a follow up was:

This will be the first real big test for our offense against an incredibly talented D.

And I stand by that. App's defense had some very good athletes but it was inexperienced, starting 4 freshman in the middle of the field and losing most of it's talented D-line to graduation. UND's defense was terrible, and OPSU was even worse. I don't believe the Grizzly offense has faced a more complete unit than NAU, hence "the first real test" and note if was for the offense against the D - I'm not saying for the whole team, that first test was App, the 2nd test was UND, and so on.

However I will say, PSU will be our first test against an option-based offense.

Beyond that I don't see any other "first" tests, then it gets into adapting to more familiar faces/schemes/teams.

Our offense plays against the best defense in the BSC every day in practice.

And I fear CP's offense much more than I fear PSU's...

I don’t disagree that NAU will put up a fight, and frankly I wasn’t responding to your comment about their defense.

Here is all I am saying. For as long as I can remember, the next game is always “the first real test”, according the expertise of our fan base. After the Griz dominate a team, then they were always conveniently weak in hindsight. It’s played-out football clichés. For two decades the Griz dominated the BSC and all you heard was how weak the competition was.

Mark my words, the Griz will dominate NAU and the post game assessment will talk about how weak NAU was and how PSU is “the first real test”. It’s a broken record.

Raider, are you certain you're not confusing posts from cat and ewoo fans from those of Griz fans? I don't see too many Griz fans saying our opponents (save for the Panhandler disaster) are weak. I see many saying the Griz made them look that way.

But I agree with Brint: this will be UM's biggest test to date defensively. I watched the SD/NAU game, and NAU's D was impressive. Yes, SD has a ways to go offensively, but there was still a marked talent differential.

All we have to do is tackle, that is what cost the Griz that game last year was lots of terrible angles and tackling. The D ends must make sure to contain, make Bauman have to run straight at our linebackers, I will take our linebackers vs Bauman any day.

This is on the money. Most of our losses last year (and certainly NAU) were tied to bad angles and missed tackles. There were few plays were we just weren't there. More often it was our guys let them slip away from the initial contact and turn nothing into a big gainer. Hopefully we make that initial contact count this time.

They have had three breaks go their way in the form of 3 pick-6's, without which they could very well be 0-3. They are not a good team on offense AT ALL!!! There is no reason we shouldn't be able to run up the score on these guys. Last year we blew a big halftime lead, against a much better NAU team, but we were without a halfway decent QB. Pretty sure TM threw 3 picks in that game that lead to NAU scores. That loss was on our offense and particularly our QB. We will destroy this NAU team! We have a huge upgrade in JJ at the QB position and our secondary has improved as well!

I'm glad I'm not the only on this boat. I noticed that too. I mean, c'mon, they were having trouble against UCD. If we're gonna talk about the Griz's tests, they're gonna come the entire month of October. PSU, CP, & EWU are all gonna be tough games.

Oh yeah I get that. I suppose it's just tough because sometimes going into these earlier games, like App, we expected them to be so much better than they actually were. Sometimes people try to pinpoint that first real challenge, but can only use hindsight to guess if it has been or not.

I hope Ty has been making the 1s on D face an unbalanced front all week. They seemed lost when they saw that formation last year.

It would be cool to see the griz throw out an unbalanced front once in a while too. It seems like the only formation missing from our playbook. If we did, maybe we'd see Hines or Weyer as the extra OL, but it would be fun to see tonga in that role too.
