LadyGriz Nate Harris new head coach of the Lady Griz!

I encourage anyone that has issue with the number of black female athletes being recruited into the basketball program to reach out to the University. I believe the responses will open your eyes to the difficulty they have in getting black females to even respond let alone setup recruiting visits. The fixes are no where as easy as many of you suggest.

You just stated what Coach Rob Selvig said many times when he was coaching and recruiting at UM.

How many black assistant coaches have been in those different programs?

IF Harris wants to move in this direction hire a black assistant and see how it generates interest.

Can't say it doesn't work and continue to have the same diversity on a staff and expect a different result. DeCuire and now Hauck have been provided as examples of show it does work

At least it would be a start to what you believe is a more complex issue.

This falls back on that less than 10% on NCAA D-1 women's coaching positions are black. You are hoping to draw from a small candidate pool to overcome several issues that are outside the control of the coaches.

It really doesn't matter unless Harris wishes to attempt changing the landscape of the program.

You keep bringing up why it CANT happen, we keep trying to tell you a first step in how it CAN.

No, I bring up why it HASN'T happened. As maroon mentioned, going all the way back to Robin, the inability to recruit black females hasn't been from a lack of effort.

If you haven't ever tried to hire a black assistant then there is a starting point to change the narrative we are speaking of.

Did Selvig, Schweyen, Petrino, Holsinger and now Harris ever try to bring on a black assistant? If the answer is yes and they turned down offer then you would have an argument. But if all they ever say is it's hard to recruit black athletes and don't change the make up there staff and continue to be baffled when black players don't choose LG then what actions were taken to change?

Again...it won't matter because most likley Harris and staff will continue with the standard they have set.

We are asking? We wouldn't know. If the answer is yes, then like we said there is an argument to be made.

The point we are simply making is hire a black assistant IF you want to recruit black athletes. Our guess is their hasn't been a coach currently or in the past that has attempted to do so.

Also SDSU is currently giving Oklahoma State all they can handle. You don't have to have black players to win. However if you want to change the make up of a team you staff needs to reflect that.

Because the only way to recruit black athletes is to have a black coach on staff? This is amazing since there are so few black coaches in D-1 women's basketball.

Also plenty of all white teams are successful. South Dakota State is battling Oklahoma State currently.

Problem is more than not having a black coach or recruiting black athletes. Black population in Missoula and Montana is small. The female black population is even a lower percentage. When we (I) have attempted to recruit in the past this comes into the discussion. With more black males, there is a greater natural support system due to the football players and basketball team. Can this be over come? Maybe with a female black coach that is a strong independent person. I dated a lady from Kenya that had lived in Atlanta. She lived with me in Missoula for about a year and felt very isolated for a support group.

This is a good thread. What I appreciate is that there is a genuine attempt herein to face up to an issue that goes beyond our communities (Missoula, the schools and opportunities for a more diverse society). The next step... taking action, could well be on the table (I hope so). I have to think coach Harris and AD Haslam are aware of the ramifications for change within the GrizWBB program.

I would submit that having a black assistant would be nice but I would also say as others have said that that hire would not really solve the problem. Lack of black females in Missoula and the state is the real problem and that is not going to change in the near future. Having black males in football and bb helps but that still does not fix the problem

Pretty sure I said all of this in an earlier post in this thread. Nobody listened to me though. Maybe someone will listen to you, but I doubt it.

Yep. Exactly what I said earlier as well..

I am pretty sure selvig never tried to hire a black assistant coach. He only hired former Lady Griz players to be an assistant coach. Having had only 3 black players during selvig's time the odds of having a black assistant coach was very low.

Amen, if you want to recruit star Black girls basketball players, recruit them !!! A Black assistant coach that is a good recruiter would really help the effort as does empathy and understanding !!!
Wouldn't your assertion also relate to the recruiting of Native Americans to play basketball for the Lady Griz? Yet, the LG have had numerous excellent Native American women play for us, including the late Malia Kipp, without having a single Native American coach on staff. A Black, Native American, PanAsian assistant coach, that is a good recruiter, would really help the effort.
