nary a single fcs player drafted so far...

They say the first 3 rounds are the only rounds that matter now. 4-7 rounds players of old are staying in college for NIL money. I would imagine in a couple years it evens back out as those players run out of eligibility.

But yeah the best FCS players now go I no FBS and then drafted from there.

Pros and cons. Future draft prospects is definitely a con, which many predicted years ago when saying the portal would turn the fcs into a farm system for the fbs. Yes, a pro is that it makes it easier for the kids that maybe should've gone fcs to begin with, drop down to a level they're more suited to.

FCS just isn’t that good anymore, in my opinion. Before the transfer portal and NIL Montana got a lot of guys transferring down that were good enough to be impact players at the FBS level. We haven’t had any of those guys in like 10 years.

Portal may weaken and decrease the number of NFL picks, but my guess is that portal strengthens FCS by allowing and facilitating so many good players to drop down or move from a weak FCS team to a good FCS team.
this is definitely a possibility. it's a hard thing to measure, though. i guess asking fcs coaches would be the best way to at least get a better idea of whether it's the case or not.

i wonder what the number of transfers from fcs to fbs were drafted. the lazy man way of checking (ai) results in a total of two players:

AI Overview
As of the conclusion of the first three rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft, two players who started their careers in the FCS before transferring to the FBS were drafted. These players were selected within the top 100 picks, marking a historic draft where no active FCS players were drafted in the first three rounds for the first time in 47 years.

I never thought of you as lazy, but your own words! :ROFLMAO:

Miller, Ochs? Who else? Some OL. 2 of the best were kicked out of their schools before they came to MT. UM has gotten some other very good drop downs but they weren’t FBS impact players. Speaking of which, I talked to Hayden Harris at Azteca last night.

lol nice hot take

Any attempt to rationalize the NIL somehow “stregthening” FCS talent pool is 100% cope.

The vast majority of FCS teams don’t have the revenue or donor base to compete in the NIL era.

If that happens there will be even less depth in the FCS than there is now and a lot of very poor teams. Perhaps we need to cut the number of playoff participating teams in a few years? Conferences will be very very top heavy and that leads to a weaker division overall.

I didn’t even mention NIL. I said Portal. Can you not read? FCS gets a lot of terrific players from the Portal. But go ahead and talk about NIL. I asked 2 of UM’s top players last night how they were being treated, and they smiled and said good.

It’s been happening for multiple years. UM gets the benefit of it. Have you heard of Wortham or Wing? Who cares what the depth is? I want good top 25 teams.

the portal is seemingly weakening the fcs even more than i thought.

Not just FCS, lower tier FBS is weaker than ever as well with just 16 (I think) non P4 players drafted. And even then it's just the creme de la creme, schools like UCLA were shut out in this draft. It's more top heavy than ever before. College sports as we knew them are dead.

It looks promising for some mid level P4 programs. UofA and ASU each had 4 guys drafted which was tied for 2nd in the Big 12 and their football NIL spend isn’t close to the top of the Big 12. Arizona is near the middle and ASU is below that.

Interesting. Thx for posting.

Could it be partially because Trashcan Tommy was so overhyped and then turned out to be useless? After that bust and the Cats being the supposed pinnacle of the FCS right now, maybe NFL coaches have learned to temper their expectations...
