Myths about drinking in SLC

Ok so some of them are true like you cant have more than one beer lined up at a time, you cant order a pitcher of beer if you are alone etc.

I have attached a link to assist some of you with these misconceptions. Actually SLC has a great downtown with some of the coolest bars I have been to. You do need to have a "membership" if you go into a bar that serves hard liquor. You dont need to if you go in one that just serves beer.

You can pay $4 to get a group of up to 7 in a bar(in otherwords, one member of the group pays for a temp membership and can get up to 7 in on that membership)

Hope you all enjoy our fine town and look forward to seeing lots of Maroon for the entire weekend.

I have had some fun in SLC, but to compare it to downtown Missoula on Griz gameday is a stretch. Trust me, they will know we have been there, especially if we beat the Pack. :thumb:

Had a beer in the Dick Clark Lounge in the SLC airport 2 weeks ago and got carded. They card EVERYBODY, even geezers like myself. At least my MGD didn't come in one of those dinky inflight bottles prevalent in SLC once upon a time.

It's been many years since I had a drink in SLC...at that time, you brought your own bottle of hard liquor and paid them for a glass with ice and a mixer...that's probably long gone by now...

In 1975, I could not get a beer at a Pizza Hut in Provo. In 2001, I was able to get a beer or two at various restaurants in downtown SLC.

That is Dick Clark restaurant and lounge's policy at the airport - not to confuse it with downtown SLC.

That disappeared years ago. A lot of things changed when the Olypics came to town. It is much more drinker-friendly. I agree that is a lot of fun now. It is a great place to party. The heathens have taken over the bars - or it might have been the Catholics? Jack-Mormons?

I recommend reservations if you are going out to dinner. PF Chang's is great Chinese food and does not take reservations, but there is always a line.

Only place I've ever been able to find a beer in Utah has been at a Red Lobster in Provo. The place was practically empty at 6:00 PM on a Saturday evening. Just a couple of us "sinners" I guess... :tounge:

I went down in Dec '04 and we needed to my a "membership". I heard that isn't the case now???

I was in SLC last summer and a couple popular, packed joints on a Saturday night tried to charge all 4 of us the $ 5 membership fee or whatever. Quieter, off-the-beaten-track bars will always ask one of the patrons to sponsor you if they want the business.
With all the out-of-town drinkers that are coming at once, they almost have to charge to limit the numbers in some places. They've held enough big events to know what works and what doesn't. I won't be surprised if it's a little tough to get in a few places downtown Thursday thru Saturday.

When I was there, we had to get "sponsored" to get into a bar (fortunately I was with a hot cousin of mine who got a guy to agree before he realized that she was with a bunch of guys). The really annoying thing for me was that the beer was all very low alcohol (2.3%, maybe), even the microbrews. So I ended up peeing all night, but not getting a buzz. It was like paying premium price for near beer.

I hope things have improved since those depressing days.

If you want a drink there, you will find a way. I have no doubt.

Squaters is great. Great beer and food.

Make sure to support the wonderful Wasatch Brewery. You gotta love a brewery from Utah that will produce and promote this beer:

I second PF Changs, I have been to a couple of those restaurants/bars in Vegas and they have great/tasty food and great atmosphere! (reasonalble prices too, and good food portions)

During the Olympics we frequented a bar called "Port-O-Call" (I think) the place was HUGE and packed every night. Had an awesome time.
They had a rule that stated if a party of 5 or more came in one person would become a member and the rest would be his guest's.
The rule was that the guests had to buy all the drinks. :beer2:

Love the polygamy porter.. Love porters in general..
Not a fan of P.F.Changs, unless you're interested in mass-produced "Chinese" food. I will give them credit for those lettuce wraps, though. Those are a tasty idea I now make at home for a faction of the price. My bias is generally against any chain in favor of locally-owned/operated restaurants. I like it when I go into a Chinese place and I can barely understand the maitre 'd. P.F. Changs will certainly draw a crowd, though, and they usually have a nice bar somewhere, IF you can find a seat. I realize the options are limited in Utah.
I honeymooned there in '03 (today is my 3rd anniversary, BTW). My wife and I stayed at the Sundance resort. We only had trouble buying beer the Sunday we arrived. Otherwise, we got whatever we wanted whereever we wanted it, with dinner. They just included the 'memberships' in our bill. No problem.

A LOT has changed there since the Olympics. Visit that link above for the scoop. I don't recommend Utah for partying, but it's not going to be boring, either.

Polygamy Porter is probably the best beer name ever. "One for each of the wives!" Marketing geniuses, they are.

lived in SLC for a couple of years and had NO PROBLEM getting into any bar or club that i wanted, and i never paid for a membership once. all you have to do is catch someone walking out of the club and they will sponsor you. hell, the bouncers sponsored us most of the time.

also, i don't have a hard time believing you had trouble getting beer in provo. provo is a different world from SLC. SLC is by far the most progressive city in utah, and won't be a problem getting a beer at almost any restaurant. if you had trouble finding a place to serve a beer in SLC you were probably lost and actually in provo....

the beer is 3.2, not 2.3%, but yes, still a drag. came back to missoula after drinking 3.2 beer for a few years and drank a few pitchers of moose drool......yikes, was NOT conditioned for that! the 3.2 rule may have changed since i was last there.

used to go to lunch and "golden trails." not in the nicest part of town, but very big tasty "garlic burgers." oh yeah, i forgot to mention, there may have been some mostly nude dancers.....

favorite restaurant while i was there were a fantastic mexican dive on the north end of town called the "red iguana."

i always feel like i have to defend SLC, since poeple who've never been there (or been there very little) usually are under the impression that SLC is like the rest of utah. it is and it isn't. you just have to find the parts of SLC that aren't like the rest of utah, which is easy.

have fun, wish i could be there. unfortuanately, i'll be on the road with questionable radio coverage....
