My Theory on Hauck

UM made a contract offer to Hauck. [Hauck believes he is bargaining from a position of strength because he currently has a nice gig in San Diego and doesn't need the job as much as he wants it.] So Hauck made an aggressive counter proposal. Haslam bristled at the counter proposal because of what he just went through with Stitt. But he sweetened the offer (i.e., a longer contract term and a little more money). Hauck made another counter. [Meanwhile, Hauck is busy with game preparation right now in San Diego. And so the negotiations continue, but may not conclude for awhile.]

Here is what I know about the hire process at universities (I wrote this in another thread):

If the process is like other Universities, Haslam is likely the chair of a small committee. The committee has a predetermined survey that is used to evaluate candidates. Each committee member makes a grade for each candidate response, which are summed to give an overall rating. These ratings are then summarized by the chair of the committee and a report is sent to the Provost. Given the importance of the hire, the provost then also makes a decision and reports to the BOR. The BOR makes the final decision.

With that written, given that Haslam is a Dean, the people above him would usually defer to his decision. Thus, I can see why he would say it's his decision. However, regardless of opinion, Hauck comes with a history that may give pause to the people above Haslam.

GP - who would be on that committee with him? Are we talking academics, admin types, community members, etc.?

Probably a diverse mix representing all parts of the UM community. But again, this is my experience at other universities. i don't have knowledge about how Montana does their searches. But, I would bet it is similar.

Edit: There could also be a member that is not a part of the university (Missoulian citizen).

Really don’t care who the next HC is, although I’m hoping they don’t reconsider coach Stitt for a rehired.

Don’t care if they allow time for BH to finish his season at SD

With that said, welcome back coach Hauch, and hoping for you to mirror your you past accomplishments at UM with one exception, a few NC.

If everything were to fall through, I doubt Stitt would just come back after being fired
