MWC looks at expanding beyond 12

havgrizfan said:
I know there has always been guessing and myth about Montana not being able to move up without MSU and vice versa. But, I don't think anybody really knew for certain. Well, I actually asked a BOR member not long ago about that, and this person told me it was absolutely NOT a myth. And he jokingly said, short of a Supreme Court ruling, Montana and Montana State will never be allowed to play in different conferences, and especially at different levels.

A large portion (majority) of the board are cat fans and or msu graduates, so his reply is what I would expect.
So they will use all that they can tie msu to UM. But really without UMs success would the cats even be in
Any conversation?

I am just passing along hearsay, but from what I've seen on the subject, the city of Fargo has an investment in the Fargo Dome, and in spite of all the miraculous things that program has done, there isn't much favorable sentiment for expansion or replacement.

I think they're letting a good thing go down the drain. The Fargodome really limits any growth. If Montana had just won 5-straight National Championships, Washington-Grizzly Stadium would probably be expanded by now and sitting at a 30,000 capacity.

Intriguing

But at this juncture our flagship university struggles to staunch enrollment drop, faces significant loss of program options and staff/faculty position.

Doubt that regents et al have the stomach or pocket book to make any bold moves.

At some point having a healthy UM may trump any athletic aspirations.

But would moving up really cost that much money??? We will already have the facilities in place athletics wise....

Are there different scholastic requirements we wouldn't meet?

This is all however a pipedream.....old ball and chains bozeman state will never allow UM to reach its full potential as an athletic program......we are bound to a rusty anchor.

Face it; the BOR and the University admins are all in for small college ball. Think small.

Being proactive, just in case they lose CSU to the Big12 - which I dont think will happen which will probably take teams from the AAC (ie Houston, Memphis, Cincinnati, Connecticut) or BYU.

I would think the most likely suitors are

Wichita State (rumors continue to surface about adding football again)
New Mexico State
UTEP
Rice
UT - San Antonio

Agreed.....
The Grizzly Story>
Div. 1 Pac Coast Conf /.>to less significant Div.1 Skyline Conf.>to Div II Big Sky Conf., to Big-Time FCS.
Big Time....that is if you come from the Rocky Mountain Conference...

Lets face it, MSU holds the purse strings here. Um is the submissive one in the relationship to both MSU, and the Board of Regents. Were not going anywhere upward anytime soon. When the girl with the purse-strings in bozeman is ready to make a move, then it will happen . When she feels like she wants to make a move, she'll let us know. And Hunny don't bring up the subject again....She'll let you know when she feels like it's the right time...

Griz Nuts have been in the Display-Trophy case in the BOR's office since the early 1950's.

Could UM afford to move up? Honest question...You would have to have full scholarships for all Football players (no more partial scholies) and add at least two more (not sure on this number) full scholarship programs (that's player scholarships, coaches salaries, Admin for said sports.....) We all know you have the facilities to move up in Football/Basketball, so that is a plus (Cats have for Basketball, Football would be a stretch) but with UM cutting programs and staff, to then turn around and spend millions more a year just on athletics, when the Football team is the only sport making money (again, I think they are, but not sure) makes no sense at this time. Sure you can say that MSU is holding you back (I don't think so at all) but the real hold back is the overall leadership of UM the past 10ish years.

While the number of scholarships increases in FBS and partials aren't allowed, it is inaccurate to state that ALL football players would have to be on scholarship.

I like how they put the two UM grads at the bottom of the list.

True, but the article said "inquired"...I would think they inquired. I agree though because UNM would not want them in.

Title 9 baked the Griz.

Leave the Money Football makes in the Athletic dept, and the answer is YES.

Quit paying Peter to Pay Paul to Teach Philosophy out of the Athletic Depts. Revenue Stream for starters...

Not true. UM's Admin wants to participate at the highest level possible which makes economic sense. If the MWC makes sense from a dollar stand point, they'll make the move.

And Hav's comment is interesting, because I've had BOR members tell me the exact opposite. Yes, they'd prefer the two schools stay at the same level. But they won't hold one back if the opportunity and economic value are there.

SACCAT,

If MSU was making the same coin as the Griz in their Athletic Dept., and had done the same to expand their Stadium to 26K, won a Championship or two, I have no Doubt that MSU would proactively be seeking an invite to the Mountain West . They don't have a need to repeatedly rob their athletic Dept. to pay the other bills due on their Campus like UM does....

MSU's President Waded Cruzado is a Leader with a vision to match Athletics equal to their reputation as a leading Engineer and Ag school...Engstrom on the other hand??.... (This is where the Tuba player is queued make a flagilation sound).....

What are you talking about?

Title IX is a law passed in 1972 that requires gender equity for boys and girls in every educational program that receives federal funding...........................Regardless of economic doom to such sports as Men's Wrestling and Swimming that were cut at the U in order to help the gender equality inequities at Montana. As I understand it, if you have a women to men ratio of say 60/40, then you better be prepared to have 60% of your athletic scholarship monies earmarked for the Ladies, regardless if a certain athletic program makes millions(queue the football program).....as I understand it. Title 9 certainly added to Montana's financial woes along with many schools of higher education...

Had a close friend get a full ride scholly in swimming, and the program was cut after his freshman yr. He had the option of transferring, or keeping the full ride @ Montana. He stayed and enjoyed all Missoula had to offer! :)

You raise some valid thoughts. Sure would be nice to play with the MWC schools but again the costs? Maybe an easier sell in flush economic periods. Don't think blaming on Title 9 is a reason for our present position, although it did and does have some impact. I'd like to see a move too but reality and pragmatic landscape does not support it!

Our "exposure" would be in the form of being exposed as a mediocre team in a larger conference ... a recipe for unappealing dullness and no draw for increased enrollment. In the meantime, our ball and chain little brother is growing while we are shrinking in the aspects of a university that actually count. Even here, only a few fanatics think we could move up successfully. How much of a rat's ass do you think the average Montana citizen gives for the idea of seeing the U become a cart before the horse sports institution with a slowly dying academic program? Why not just try traditional masturbation to while away your wasted time instead of using it on this redundant and pathetic version of it?
