To the Cat fans, does he have a shot at the NFL?

It'd be cool to see another Montana player doing something on the national level.

This is probably something that Brint would have a good handle on. Kroy went in the fifth
round but Caleb is a little undersized to play Def. end in the NFL. Brint, what say you?

Uh...

I'd have to throw that back to Cat fans to ask if he could switch and play as an outside linebacker in a 3-4. Does he have the range and versatility to play zone coverage? I don't doubt his pass-rushing ability at all. he's 6-3, 250(ish), he could be looked at to be a Clay Matthews-type of guy who is 6-3, 255. However at that position the NFL will want results immediately, they won't want a project they'd bring along for years.

Next Year's (2013) possible List:

5. Matt Evans New Hampshire 6'0" 227 LB (junior in 2012)

6. Colton Underwood Illinois State 6'4" 255 DL (junior in 2012)

7. Jaquiski Tartt Samford 6'1" 220 DB (RS-Sophomore in 2012)

8. Stephon Robertson James Madison 5'11" 225 LB (RS-Junior in 2012)

9. Marcus Williams North Dakota State 5'11" 194 CB (Junior in 2012)

10. Jordan Tripp Montana 6'3" 240 (junior in 2012)

All the rest in the Top 10 not mentioned above were seniors in 2012.

Catdaddy, in reference to your question of whether Schreibeis has the size for NFL DE, it's interesting to remember that Kroy Biermann was thought to be undersized for DE at the NFL level and they projected him as an outside linebacker but then questioned his ability to defend passes. Well, we saw where all that ended up, and certainly hope (and believe) that Caleb Schreibeis could have an equally strong impact in the NFL. Congrats to him for the Buchanan Award.

I think that this came as such a shock to Caleb that he has never even thought about it playing on the next level. Simple answer is if he makes us his mind to give it a shot, I think he could make it in a 3-4 defense as an OLB. To be drafted he would have to show really good change of direction (short shuttle, 3 cone drill, etc). The reason Fletcher got picked up was because he had one of the fastest 3 cone drills or short shuttles among all linebackers..that got scouts attention.

Other key for him to make it would be to stay healthy...Fletcher was close to unseeding Spikes in the rotation at ILB for Patriots, but every time he gained momentum, he would get injured and Spikes would claim spot back.

Either way I am proud of what he has accomplished, and he had a tremendous year for the Cats. He turned himself into a complete player at that DE position.

Not bad for a former walk on.

+1

Congratulations!!!

Yep. Really proves the importance of recruiting preffered walk-ons. It's really impressive how many Montana players have walked on and have become starters and have even gone on to have NFL careers.

You should add UNC's Clarence Bumpas to that list. He was a candidate this season until he tore his bicep mid-way through this season. That of course ended his season way too early.

I think he has a decent shot at NFL. He should at least get a FA contract. Schreibeis is the same size as Kroy is now, don't know if he is as fast.

Congratulations to Mr. Schreibeis and the MSU program. Also to the BSC for winning this award 8 times in its 18 year history! The next closest conference is the CAA with 3 winners.

Actually I believe this is the BSC 5th winner: Allen, Bierman (sp), Peach, Sheritt and now Schreibeis. The other three are from Cal Poly (Gocong, Shotwell & Beck) before they were BSC members. Still pretty cool to have this many winners from our conference.

Just wondering if he's fast enough. Caleb runs a 4.85 40. How fast was Kroy? To me
in comparison it seems that Kroy was faster as a senior. That's kinda the defining factor
to being a dominant DE pass rusher.
