MSU Taking New Approach to Special Teams

I don't know who came up with Sixx or whatever for the nickname of Vigen but it is stupid and doesn't make any sense. You probably think you're clever for coming up with it and using it at every opportunity and hoping it catches on.

You're all also very quick to make fun of this guy and diminish his abilities but he had been with NDSU from 1998-2013. That's 15 yrs with the most dominant program in FCS history. I doubt he does worse than Stitt.
We're waiting anxiously for the next lecture.

This article makes no sense. I have so many questions.

This sounds like that guy who gets dumped and says, “you know, I had lots of options and chose to not date any more because honestly the percentage of standalone men is pretty low where you don’t overlap with a position.”

What he is saying is that there is rarely a coach who is exclusively the special teams coach. Usually they have someone, or multiple coaches handle special teams who also have other roles on the team like TE or LB coach too.

Or even associate head coach/special teams coordinator?

I didn't come up with it, but I will continue to call him Sixx, make fun of him, and diminish his abilities. I did the same with Kramer, I did the same with Ron Ash, I did the same with Choach, and I'll do the same with the next guy. I don't care how many years he spent with the landwhales over in Nordakoda, he's the coach of the Bobcats. It's not personal.

Go back to the hiring process MSU used to figure out #6, six, seis, or Sixx. Not hard to figure out.
You sound like someone trying his damnedest to not piss off anyone. Self censoring is the term of the day.
You want to have your cake and eat it too. You live next door to Vigen, or do business with MSU? This is eGriz, not BN. Kumbaya is not heard around here.

I understand where Coach Vigen is coming from with regards to his special teams, but the problem is none of his coaches he is assigning have any background with special teams. His comment that special teams rarely have a dedicated coach is not correct. Usually it is a coach who is in charge of special teams and linebackers (or another position). Not often do you see a bunch of coaches that are dedicated to another positions just dropped into a “piece” of the special teams. At Montana we have Coach Hauck who is in charge of special teams. This is because he has significant experience with special teams. As everyone knows, special teams often win or lose a game. Kickers, punters and long snappers are a beast unto themselves. They need a coach who has a D1 level background in special teams. I believe Coach Vigen is very wrong in the way he is structuring this. With that said, I honestly don’t care if he screws this up. Many of us on eGriz and others that are die hard MSU fans are scratching our heads over many decisions he makes.

Gee thanks.
Like I said, do you think that’s rarer than having no special teams coach at all?

I came up with Coach Sixx. I think I’m cleaver coming up with Coach Sixx. The nickname Coach Sixx is not stupid. Coach Sixx is derived from Coach Sixx being the a sixth candidate picked for the job. Coach Sixx is also a reference to 80’s Rocker Nikki Sixx.

Coming up with nicknames for bobcat coaches has a long and proud history on eGriz. The struggle in coming up with a nickname for Coach Sixx was due to Coach Sixx being devoid of a personality.

Coming up with a nickname for Coach Sixx is like coming up with a cool nickname for a 1987 beige Dodge k-car.

The moniker, Coach Sixx, makes perfect sense. However, if you can come up with a better nickname for Coach Sixx, than Coach Sixx, I would be willing not to call Coach Sixx, Coach Sixx.

Bobby Hauck oversees Special Teams. C'mon man, everyone knows this! He was Special Teams Coordinator for SDSU and constantly talks about how he is a Special Teams guy.

Not trying to smoke any guns. Just showing an example of a team that doesn't technically have a special teams coach.

I imagine the Cats will have someone overseeing special teams as well. If not it should be evident the first game of the season when we miss every field goal, botch all our long snaps and give up a few kick returns for touchdowns.

The article makes it seem like there will be nobody overseeing the whole of special teams. Sixx has the kicking/punting, another guy has the kick and punt returns, maybe another one to handle the holding, another to handle the long snapping, and two more guys to handle FGs into the wind versus with the wind.

There are a lot of cat fans really nervous about Special Teams on BN. I’m just saying… I don’t expect Sixx to bring on a Special Teams Coordinator, but at least hire a guy who has been one before. Or at the least, has some experience there. Sixx is sandbagging the ST program. Can’t wing it at this level.

I’m afraid the days of wine and roses are coming to an end for the cats. It had to happen someday, what program could persist in the rarefied air of sustaining a .500 record?

The laissez faire attitude toward the coaching of the kicking game is just another example of Sixx losing the locker room, the assistant coaches and major boosters.

The cats are heading back to the dark days of the Solomonson era (.273). Another nondescript North Dakotan that was not quite as exciting as green jello.

Somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico a man aboard a 40’ sailboat is chuckling as he pops the cork on a bottle of chard.

Well this little nugget of a post made my day. LMFAO. Beautiful and What happens if Coach Sixx actually bombs in his first year? Do they keep him for two years or go with numero siete next time? They are kind of in a pickle if he struggles as badly as everyone thinks he is going to. He could make Bob Stitt look like a rockstar and that is saying something. Then again, maybe Choate can get his band back together again. Texas looks like they are going to be a dumpster fire.

I think it’s a very fine nickname, and so much more catchy than Coach Personwhodoesnoteatanyfoodderivedfromanimals.

Oh, he’s definitely already lost the locker room based on what I’ve been told (which is that he’s already lost the locker room). With all the departures of players and staff, I can’t remember a coach who has damaged the #culture and #trajectory of a program in such a short amount of time. Hats off to Sixx.

About once a month I head over to BN to see what is being talked about…you know, for a little comic relief. Well, I nearly spit my food out laughing when I read this. Someone posted updated pictures of the new BAC today. This was the last comment:

It doesn't seem nearly as large as I thought it would in that last picture from the field.
