MSU Coaching Search

This is a great hire. ABQ approves.

I promised we would all know who was going to kick your asses soon enough. Again, the grizz aren't going to beat the Cats in football anytime in the near future.

You keep making statements like this but you managed to completely ignore PR's offer to put money on the next game. Put your money where your mouth is.

Anxiously awaiting some name-trolling. Seriously. I'm actually excited to see where you go with this one.

Vegetable boy is a pretty good hire for MSU. He has a good pedigree and understands smash mouth football. His biggest issue is the Griz now out recruiting the Cats in state and does he see any player defections? Oh and there is the assistant Coaches issues as well. Cats fans who think he is going to have instant success are delusional. In the long run he will probably be a decent coach.

I think he will keep BJ Robertson for in-state recruiting. If he does, Cat recruiting in Montana will not miss a beat. Plus, Vigen grew up in a small ND town and will relate fine with Montana families. With the players they had on the selection committee, their support of Vigen may limit
defections. That will be something to keep an eye on. I am surprised we only saw a couple during this interim period. That is a good sign.

Copper, you are right, IMO. But, let me condense your post for known fact. 'Cat fans ARE delusional.' This is established, and incontrovertible. :thumb:

looks mediocre at best. Glad they made the hire.

Looks like a great pedigree. Good hire. I’m really glad that the drop down pipeline is not Nebraska and REALLY glad it’s not Oregon. I can live with Wyoming drop downs. That said, they finally have a coach that has a track record for developing quarterbacks in a system that fits MSU’s current personnel. Probably a good hire. Will be interesting to see how many current assistant coaches he retains and how the chemistry works. That will be key in the short run.

Congrats to Bozeman State on your several week search and getting your third choice.

Actually think he is a decent hire though.

Why would cow college resort to hiring a guy who doesn’t eat meat?

He was their 10th pick—that’s why. We’ve already established the five who turned down or withdrew. There were another five to six names on the list who had no interest.

Guess beggars can’t be choosers. When you get down to the 10th pick, bottom of the barrel, you’ll take what you can get.

Hilarious and true Tourist!

Saw my neighbor. I thought he would be gleaming and proclaiming but he was reserved and a bit dejected. Like he was just glad it was over and how he got to the point where he was willing to accept VanDiest. I think the boobcat hype machine had him whipped into a frenzy.

Finally when the news came out, he was kind of self-deprecating. He said Cowboy and Buffaloes fans hate this guy; horrible play caller and no HC experience. He only got the job because he likes 3yds/cloud of dust (“culture”), was willing to keep staff, in fact would prefer to not even hire a WR coach (no need), and he’s great at managing a “QB carousel“ (and has his own guy).

Poor guy. I told him I would not kick his dog tonight.

Sounds like a nice neighbor trying to make you feel good. He feels sorry for you knowing you are a grade school drop- out. You are fortunate to have him for a neighbor.

Their support? For which of the 10,000 candidates that were put on the list, interviewed, offered, rejected? Oh, you mean the 1 that finally accepted! Yeah, he was the one they really wanted all along. Everyone else was just subterfuge! They were just toying with your emotions.

Wow, where did you get your facts on who was actually offered, interviewed and rejected? You must have a direct line into the committee. Impressive!

Woof. Not a good hire for MSU at all, but I guess you have to take what you can get. #6 choice, wow. We definitely know nothing is for certain until they parade his family through the press garage, so maybe they will luck out and he will bail.

Currently workshopping nicknames for Vigen—Bozeman’s 1:45am chick from the bar. “Slim Pickin’s” has a ring to it, but I have no clue if he’s a fat or not.

BN is already counting their championships before their new coach has ever coached one game. Pre-season champs again!

as a bison fan who helped put logs on the "fire vigen, save season" thread in 2011. vigen is as boring as a tit mouse and predictable as hell as a play caller.

ndsu and wyoming both relied on defense and controlling the clock.. thats what Bohl does. it worked at NDSU because they are that good Vigen at Montana St doesnt scare me in the least. 3-4 years, make some money then back to NDSU as a Head Assistant to Coach Tyler Roehl in 2025.

Damn, that’s a LONG time in the biz without ever being a head coach....

Ya but a lot of nattys and a couple of bowl victories from places those should be hard to come by.

It's 'had', not 'have.' Past tense vs present tense. Committee disbanded. They kept me informed. Can't be specific on whom and how often, for obvious(at least to me)reasons, but in the end the conversation went something like this: ' Brent, the other five we really didn't want. YOU the man!!!

So my initial thoughts on the guy after knowing almost nothing about him other then looking at his Wikipedia page, I would say on paper this is a good hire for the cats. They struck out on a couple of big names and I know that was probably frustrating, but the biggest thing they’re getting is a QB’s coach, which we know was obviously the biggest knock on Choate. He recruited Carson Wentz, he recruited and coached Josh Allen, and recruite Brock Jensen. He was QB and PGC at NDSU and then OC and QB at Wyoming.

Those are the only two schools he’s ever coached at, and in some ways if you’re a cat fan, that’s a little concerning cause you usually like to see guys branch off a little bit and potentially move into some bigger roles at P5 schools. It’ll be interesting to see if he decides to take the Stitt route and call the plays, cause usually guys like this who’ve been longtime OC and QB coaches like to be in control of the playbook. He’s got a big decision to make at DC, cat fans seem to like Daly, but as of now it looks as if there are only two assistant coach openings, and he may wanna bring in some guys he’s familiar with and feels comfortable with rather then be a total stranger walking into a room with a bunch of guys he’s likely never met.

The final thing that stands out is he’s a first time head coach. Last time that worked out for the cats, will it again? With how deeply invested he appears to be in the offensive side of the ball, how much familiarity does he have with the defensive side of the ball? What’s his recruiting background? Is he a fiery, passionate guy like Choate, cause that’s what appears to work for them. Maybe Titleist can enlighten us a little bit more as to what the cats are getting themselves into.

Overall, seems like a good hire, but how tight of a leash will cat fans put on him if he loses to the Griz next year? Should be an interesting game next year.

Go Griz!
